Have done a little research and I’m intrigued enough to consider a trip. Looking into boutique hotels as well as Airbnb accommodations. Thinking this winter - sometime January to March. Looking for feedback from someone who’s been there.

Don’t know if you have use the search function on this page, but there are several people who have been and came back to post their trip reviews.

Everything they said about that place was incredible. I am actually also planning a trip there for next year

I recommend Puebla over San Miguel. In addition to the colonial feel, Puebla has ruins close and gives you the option of flying in to Mexico city.

I have researched it, but not have gone. The weather is perfect. Like 70 all year. Beautiful architecture. The drug violence is an issue, so don't go in blind.

I spent some time there back in 2009. Approximately a month. Flew into Leon. Rented a nice home with a beautiful courtyard. Plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance. There’s some natural springs and some good markets in the area as well. Seems like the locals shot off fireworks nightly.

Our wedding was in february. It gets pretty cold there at night. Bring earplugs. They ring bells all night and shoot fireworks for no reason.

My wife and I went in June. The 2 big Hotels are Live Aqua and Rosewood. We ended up staying at Live Aqua bc I was able to use my Southwest points to book a room. Apparently, Live Aqua is the more “Mexican” place to stay bc its owned by a Mexican company. We thought that was pretty neat. Had a great brunch on Sunday morning. Rosewood is much more American and more resort style. Live Aqua didn’t have their Covid testing down as well either prob bc most guests are from Mexico anyway. We were able to go to the Rosewood and get test for like $25 ea and got results in about 15 min.
Food was cheap and legit everywhere. Never got tired of it.
If I had to do it again I would save money and do an Airbnb. Everything is safe in Centro is safe. We stayed in a hotel bc we wanted a pool but the pool was really hot in June already anyway.
We didn’t go out at night, only bc we were so tired of exploring all day, but the city was super clean and saw no thugs. Everyone is very Covid conscious and masks are mandatory everywhere.
Also, it’s nothing like a resort destination in Mexico. Plan on getting Mexican pesos before you go. You can always get out cash and use credit cards at restaurants but it’s nice to have pesos when you get there.

Highly recommend it. Very cool safe town with a lot of character. My wife would walk to the markets in the morning for coffee and smoothies. The food is great. People are great. Can’t speak for the nightlife as we were there earlier this year and they had Covid restrictions, but would go again tomorrow even with them. If you don’t go with one of the big hotels and go with a group, there are a lot of really nice Airbnb’s. Hope this helps with your decision.

ETA: Feel free to ask me any questions.
