What’s the point of actually filing taxes?

I got a letter from the feds that I owed $1000 more in taxes. I never got around to filing it. So they took it out of my bank account.
Why the hell do I have to file taxes if they already know how much I owed? Someone please explain this shite to me.

I know people who never paid and have liens on their property for hundreds of thousands and nothing ever happens.
They keep living in the house for years.
I don't get that.

BECAUSE THE WAY A LIEN WORKS IS THE LIENS HAVE TO BE PAID OFF AT THE TIME OF SALE OR THEY CANT SELL IT, SO UNTIL THEY SELL IT THEY DONT HAVE TO PAY shite

Pretty much.
If you overpay the IRS, that is a “donation”.
If you underpay the IRS, that is penalties, interest, and possibly jail time.
But if you hand all the numbers to these frickers and ask them what you owe, then follow their directions, they will say it is wrong and go after you.
It’s Orwellian as frick.

My tax accounting class showed me just how fricked up it all is. We’d work a problem out and use Tax Cut and out of a class of 20 people we’d get 20 different answers

thats a whole different thing and its not a lien its a tax sale, thats on the parish or state to put it up for sale to collect back taxes and they can do that any time they want to.
i got a notice my house was going up for sale because town taxes werent paid and were 5 weeks overdue. turns out the mailman stamped my tax bill as undeliverable because they didnt feel like delivering mail that day. i raised hell with the mayor but they dont send out second notices if you bill gets returned to them. its crazy the shite they can get away with for taxes but liens are just a joke and rarely worth the trouble to file them
