Colorado trip questions

Trying to plan a Mardi Gras 2022 trip and the kids want to go back to Colorado and see snow (last time we did Denver, Estes park and RMNP). Was thinking of flying into Colorado Springs, doing garden of gods for the first day then going to Breckinridge for a few days. Not skiers but see we could sled. What else is there to do in Breck besides sking in late Feb/early March? Just worried that not being skiers 3-4 days in breck may be too much.
Any suggestions on what else we could do, or other towns that may be more suited for us that time of year and not sking.

I don’t care for Colorado Springs

Only reason I was flying into there is the airfare was $150 a person cheaper than Denver. We have 5 so that adds up.

Go tubing, snow shoeing, snowmobiling. Tons of shite to do!

Colorado Springs is great for a day or two. It's a conservative working class town that is at the actual base of the mountains. People who shite on it are the same people who shite on walkons without a real reason other than to do it.
Garden of the gods is worth the trip.
Frisco outdoor park is cool and good for kids. Ride over to Leadville and see the museum. Also can do snowmobiling out of Leadville that I think it's worth it. If you go to Leadville, you may as well continue south to BV and see the collegiate peaks then loop back around to Breck.
Since you're going to do Co Springs to Breck, you'll pass in front of the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife center. 100% worth the stop. They get on their liberal soap boxes a bit, but it's still a cool spot to see all those wolves.

We stayed in Breck this past June. We stayed a few blocks off the main street on Frenc street. Nice condo with a walking path right to main street that dumped you out by Empire burger. Price was cheaper than a typical condo in Destin.
We didn't spend much time in Breck. Just the late evenings from time to time. We drove out to Red Rocks (due to we had to run to Denver airport) checked out Idaho Springs, Loveland pass, Crystal lakes, Independence pass. We checked out some breweries, the sapphire point overlook out over Frisco at night, Poked around the Quandary Peak area, and just enjoyed our views from the balcony at night. We did go up to the slope area to check it out to say we did but realized after wishing we spent out time doing other things.
We drove in which was an adventure on its own. Stopping in at Medicine Mound Tx, Cadallac Ranch, Rotan New Mexico overlook (spent the night in Rotan), Bishops Castle Co.,
and a great detour to Guffey Colorado.
Different time of the year but we had a blast. Can not wait to do it again.
Plan on going back in June to hike Mt Elbert

How would the roads be in that area in early March? We did Denver to Estes Park two Thanksgivings ago right after a big snow storm and that main road was pretty well plowed. Some of the exit roads were iced and that was not a fun drive.
I know it depends on weather , but, for the most part that stretch of road from Co Springs to Breck should be pretty well traveled/plowed right?

The road from Co Springs to Breck is actually fairly remote in stretches. E.g. it goes through Fairplay which is in the middle of nowhere. If I’m not mistaken, March is usually the snowiest month in the mountains too. I would get 4WD/AWD rental car at minimum.

I was planning on 4wd / AWD , but, saying that i need that at minimum has me a little concerned. That last Co drive for me was partially on roads with ice and that was nerve racking even with 4WD.

Go snowmobiling, take a dog sled ride, fly fishing, snowshoeing, take a sleigh ride. I would lean more towards Crested Butte than Breckenridge. A better town for kids, more cost effective, better food and not as crowded. You can do all of these same activites in both places. Depending upon the ages of your children, your kids may ski free and it is a great time to learn. See Kids Ski Free in Colorado
Hope this helps.

check the new chain/tire law. have a friend who said the rental car company forced them to upgrade to a 4x4 because of this new law.

That area around Fairplay can get fairly hairy during a storm. You could go up to Denver and go through 70 to make it less sketchy but you still run the risk of getting caught in a big storm.
That said you can usually plan around it. EG don’t drive when the forecast says a storm is imminent. Usually the storms last 1-2 days max so you should be able to avoid if you’re looking at forecasts.

Or they just prefer the dozens of other towns in Colorado that are better than CS

Roads are going to be ok unless you catch a big storm. The big pinches are along I70. Fremont Pass (i70 to Leadville) doesnt close unless theres a big storm. Hoosier Pass(Breck to Fairplay) is the same, which is how youd come in from the Springs.

4 wheels spin just as easy as two when it’s ice.

4WD is necessary especially with a car full of kids.

We went this past January to Co Springs for a sighseeing weekend trip, but spent most of our time in Manitou Springs. Buch of shops and restaurants and it's a smaller mountain town. Garden of the Gods was nice. Royal Gorge bridge was cool (about a 40 min drive IIRC). Other than that, there wasn't much else to do besides eat. The road to Pike's Peak was closed so that kinda sucked.
We took an extra day to drive up through Denver, Boulder, and Estes Park and that was nice.
I would definitely plan a skiing trip next time, but it was a nice, quick introductory trip to CO
