The Electoral College was founded on the same principle of the Senate to give smaller states a say without getting totally shut down by the big states every time
this time it clearly worked in that fashion as you can tell in the state-by-state results

This.
Look at a map of the results by county. Back in the day, all that red was called flyover country.
If those highly populated but geographically small areas of blue were allowed to determine the president and thus the direction of the nation on their own, that massive sea of red having been robbed of the ability to have their voices heard at the ballot box would rise up and have them heard in other ways and the peaceful transfer of power we have now would cease to exist.

At the Constitutional Convention, James Madison actually believed that a straight popular vote of the people would be best method to select the President. However, because blacks were allowed to vote in some parts of the North, he didn't believe Southern states would support popular elections for the President out of fear of being out-voted by freed Northern blacks and would refuse to ratify the Constitution with that included. The implementation of electors negated that.

Watch this for why the Electoral College is necessary and a very good thing to have:
Prager U - Electoral College

Anybody who wants the electoral college abolished hates America. They should be required to read the Federalist Papers before being allowed to vote.

looking at the map... I'm starting to believe (crazy as it may be) the EC may prevent a civil war within the next few years
imagine how Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin or North Carolina would feel if they all voted Trump and yet the votes of New York and California would've erased them like nothing

I subscribe to the belief that while I think I might be of moderate intelligence, I am nowhere in the ball park of our founding fathers, and I do not need to be tampering with the ground work they very clearly laid out for this nation. Electoral college it is.

My thoughts are that true democracy sucks.

It does lead to problems.
Same way that popular vote for Senators probably should be done away with.

Without it, only the big states would have power.
I think it was called the New Jersey compromise. The senate puts all the states on the same level power wise.
We are a federal republic. Not a pure democracy. We have a constitution that was intended to keep government very limited. Read the bill of rights. It limits government. It recognizes that the people have rights before the government.

The majority needs checks and balances, it's something we forget in 2016.

I would like to see a change in our election system.
1. Elimination of all party primaries.
2. Open Primary which votes on the second tuesday in October. If no candidate gets a majority of the popular vote, the top two vote getters move to the next round.
3. General election on the second tuesday in November between top two vote getters from primary decided using electoral college.

The flip side to that (which won't be popular on this board seeing as it doesn't benefit Louisiana), is the EC just robbed the majority of American voters of their voice. Is it more important to benefit more square miles or more people? I don't have the answer, I just like providing alternative viewpoints.
