Keeper Auction League Question (CMC & Henry)

12 team, PPR, keeper auction league, $200 budget
Keeper cost is 2020 price +$10
I can keep CMC ($80) and Henry ($49) but that only leaves $71 left to fill out a roster.
In a typical year 10 teams will keep their studs at inflated prices and 2 teams will keep zero. This leads to available studs going above their value early then lots of starters going for way under value as everyone is bidding with short stacks.
Would you spend $129/$200 to lock up CMC and Henry but have to get lucky/smart to find 3 starting WRs on a short budget or keep only one or none and have a full budget to go after whoever you want?
* I could keep Henry since $49 is pretty reasonable and then try to reacquire CMC for less than $80, which is certainly possible as I got him last year for $70 accidentally trying to bid him up. I do think they both should finish top 5 and could finish 1&2 so I don't mind paying whatever it takes.

This is very interesting. And well presented
You'll get some good takes on this one and you can go in a few directions.
My initial thoughts would be:
- Henry at $49 seems logical to keep
- CMC (with 2 teams full stack) could easily go for $80+ range and either you'll pay more to re-bid on him or you'll lose him and drain someone else.
- CMC and Henry together are a huge RB advantage for the guaranteed price.
- If you keep both, the 2 full stacks will be able to outbid anyone else for their choices, but they'll be bidding against each other in many instances.
- If you keep both, you have to know who you want to target at other positions and budget accordingly.
- Serviceable WRs are generally easier to come by than stud RBs. (Duh)
- CMC when healthy is such a complete added advantage.
I would be inclined to lock down both and use the rest of your budget wisely to pick your spots.

Thanks for the input, lines up with what I was thinking.
Better to potentially overspend a little on a sure thing* than roll the dice and end up not getting who you want or overspending on some other RB to justify his #1 spot on your roster.
We have been doing auctions for a decade and no matter how much preparation I put in things always go a little sideways by the end of the first round of nominations.
At least locking up the starting RB spots with CMC & Henry provides some flexibility for finding bargains/sleepers/veterans for the WR/TE spots while everyone else is still swinging for the fences.
*My ego also wants to recoup my loss on investment from last season after he went down early. He can't have a season ending injury back to back, right?

I have the exact format, except we do +$5.
CMC, you're not getting a huge discount but you're not overpaying either. Not overpaying and keeping him away from someone else makes it a good move.
Huge discount on Henry. And in the event that you're overpaying for CMC (overpaying with respect with everyone else would have bid), you make it up here and more.
As you have probably noticed from years pasts, you can get some REALLY GOOD WRs in the 20s. You just have to be patient.

but that only leaves $71 left to fill out a roster.

I’d keep both.
You can easily spend $5 on QB and TE each, between two players at each position (I’d draft a “starter” and a “backup” to 1. Play matchups 2. Give yourself another bite at the Apple because your first guy probably isn’t anything special
So that leaves $61 for 4 WRs and a few bench guys. Easily doable.

I say keep them both for $129, mainly because I just want to see what you are able to pull off with $71.

It's not that hard. It's not unusual for the top RB to push $100.

Investing that much money in two stud RBs, you would ideally want to draft their backups for insurance, but you also have to consider that both of these teams have a Week 13 BYE. It's just something else to consider.

Week 9 update:
Good news is I can keep them both next season for $149/$200, third time's the charm right?
