Friends,

It is with great joy to hear that for the first time in over four years, and after false start after false start with promised opening dates that did not come to pass, the most important Italian grocery store and deli in America is set to reopen in the French Quarter on Saturday.

I hope you will join Mother and me during this festive event. The reopening almost certainly will take a place on TulaneLSU’s top 10 memories of Central Grocery.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

I can grab their muff at Zuppardos with very little effort.

Same at Aquistpace. It really heats up well and melts in your mouth.

Just like Hubig's Pies--------I'm over them.

Rouse's sells a 2 pack of the Muffaletta bread, their deli has all the cold cuts and cheese needed and olive salad is on the aisle with the condiments.

Just have to make sure they have the bread on hand before buying everything else.

Central Grocery

We went years ago and received the worst customer service that I have experienced in a while. Was yelled at "what do you want!" and the guy behind the counter acted super annoyed.
The muff was cold, as ice and the bread was hard.

I chalked it up as the worst muffaletta that I've ever had and vowed to never return. I don't care if they ever open again.

Lovecchio's Deli in Norco has the best muffaletta I've had.

I hope they have covers for the bulk items now. I saw a kid spit into the red beans there once. Told the employee and they just shrugged. Never again.

He's trying to run a deli and you were in there fricking up his day.

Don't take it personally, that is the spot they aim for with their service.

Almost 40 years ago I took a North LA girl on a surprise date. Drove her from LSU to Central Grocery. Picked up a Muff and sat by the river, watched the boats go by and enjoyed our meal. Ironically she never gave up the muff and this date was designed by my eventual wife. The NLA girl did puke on me at a party weeks later. Those were the days.

my Sicilian grandmother and great aunts used to drive from BR religiously once a week to shop at central. I never thought that the muff was my favorite but it is good. Getting a muff at central and eating it in the square or at the moonwalk is a great day no matter what

My favorite is napoleon house

I've never experienced bad service at Central Grocery, but some of the customers can be A-holes.

Everybody has a bad day every now and then, but NEVER take it out on your customers-------unless they are being the above mentioned A-holes, then it's game on.

There are many better muffeletas than Central.
Went downhill long ago.

A friend who is an Italian chef (he’s Italian and also a chef) says that a muffelata should never be heated. He claims that the heat affects the taste of the olive salad.
