the process might be similar but the outcome, at least for me, is not the same. i've never tasted BBQ off of a gas grill that tasted as good as BBQ off a charcoal pit. gas just doesn't produce that rich smokey flavor that i expect BBQ to have, even when they use wood chips.

but, of course, that is just my opinion....

smoke: both

Not even close. I have a smoke box for my gas grill. You can't put enough chips in it to generate the same amount of smoke with a charcoal pit. And it takes too much time to replace the burnt wood chips with new chips.

I enjoy my gas grill, but it can't reproduce the flavor of a charcoal pit.

Charcoal, but if somebody sticks some gas in face I won't turn it down.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I went ahead and decided to buy both. A Weber gas grill and a sturdy, "barrel-type" charcoal pit in 1/4 " stainless. Cost a good bit, but I just love cooking on my grills outdoors. I have three kids, and even though they are not little any more (younest is 12), they still (along with their mom) enjoy throwing the ball/frisbee around while I cook. Or they play on the trampoline or play basketball. Or, they engage in what has become, by far, their favorite pasttime: fighting with each. lol!

gas:
The Holland Grill
Luxor
Alfresco

Charcoal:
Big Green Egg (hand down the best grill ever)

and then there is this little gem that my parents sell at our store in Houma:

LINK

it's a wood-pellet grill, very cool and cooks a mean ribeye...havent had much else off of it yet, but it's worth its weight in gold.

I personally use charcoal, but you can't beat the convenience of a gas.

You can also try to emulate the smokyness by getting a wood box and burning water soaked wood chips.

I use a smoker grill, so I like to use mesquite wood.
