Brothers Lounge on Magazine would have to qualify.

Is this the one where the ceiling is about 5' tall? I love that a place like that is in the middle of the most self-consciously snooty street in the city

I would also nominate Club Gemini right where the Earhart Expressway ends. Not that I've ever been inside but you have to think any place with a large sign outside reading 'NO HANDGUNS NO TANK TOPS NO HAIR CURLERS' counts as a dive.

I love the Patio, its patrons and the smart-arse bartenders. There is a core group of 5-10 patrons who have had some representation every time I've been there. Great dive bar.

The Jefferson and Time Out Lounge are dives as well but I've only been a few times...lost a nice chunk of $ playing some random card game at Time Out.

That falls into the same category as The Original Brown Derby and Evelyn's. Hood bar and dive bar are not the same animal.

Damn that sucks. Luckily I didn't experience any violent crime in the 3yrs I lived in NOLA. Nic's was definitely in a shitty area.

ETA: I was told that back in the day they had a functioning toilet on the bar so patrons could just puke right there

Two good friends got robbed there as well. They were meeting me and two other friends and they were five minutes behind us. Wrong place, wrong time.

What does this place even look like on the inside (it can't be too big of a space)? I too live really close and have never wandered in...

Last time I was there . . . about a hundred years ago, I was waaaayyyy too drunk and got into a scuffle with a med student. I had "drunk strength" that night. Didn't end too badly. I think I ripped his shirt. I avoided the place after that.

Nick's Night Train was unreal. When I frequented it in the mid-70s, they didn't serve beer at night. Only their specialty cocktails.
Buffa's on Esplanade, one block off of Rampart is definietly a dive bar.

Patio Lounge(BR's high-brow dive..Area 6 dive)..Time Out..Smackwater..Cedarcrest..Time Out..Southdowns..Chris..etc..

All could be inspirations for Merle Haggard, Paul Westerberg, Johnny Thunders, Garth Brooks, Jerry Jeff Walker, Uncle Tupelo, etc..songs.

the funny thing is that the guy had left the hospital down the street to go get a car to bring his gf and his new baby home. he couldnt even start my car let alone drive it.

i sat at the corner of the street on the phone with the cops and they were asking me where he went. i told them he is just kinda sitting in the car hitting the brakes. 5 minutes later the first cop on the scene was a guy i have known my whole life and he caught the guy about 2 blocks down the road.
