When I bartended, people would sit at my bar and ask for a martini, and get pissed when they would see me make it with gin .....definitely a losing battle
I ordered a Martini at the Vintage steak house in Shreveport (pretty nice place for those not familiar with Shreveport), the waiter came back 5 minutes later saying the barteneded wanted to know what kind of vodka I wanted because they didn't have Hendrick's.... I just told him to bring me a Knob Creek on the rocks.

I make it a point to say vodka martini or gin martini.
I would bet in La, 75% of the people who order a martini are thinking something with vodka in it.

In Lafayette, 75% of women would order one and expect a glowstick in it and an umbrella on top

Yikes
I can tell you that a large % of people do not know a martini is traditionally served w/ gin. I had the same experience several times as the other bartender where customers would question me putting gin in it.
And most women
Woman: ummmm, what kind of martinis do y'all have?
Me: Haha well hmmmm. Do you like red, pink, purple, blue or green?
I perpetuated the problem, but it was just easier to please than explain.

Chill a glass - I prefer mine on the rocks, so I use a highball glass
M&R Dry Vermouth into chilled glass
Spin glass in hand for the vermouth to coat the glass
Add ice
2 to 3 oz of gin and sometimes Fee Bros Orange bitters - but bitters is not required
3 Reese anchovie stuffed olive (or maybe a cucumber spear)
Stir several times with a cocktail spoon
Enjoy!
My favorite gin is Beefeater 24 and Hendricks is close second. Regular Beefeater is just fine. My grandmother called it Braineater, and she was correct, God rest her soul.
I might also add that I love the spirit gin, but it does not love me back, especially the next morning.
I've been killing Negroni's this summer, too. Made properly, 2 of those will send me to lala land after a couple glasses of wine. But they are soooo good.

"Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel."
Too easy.
Too easy.

the next time I order a martini and the bartender asks me gin or vodka I'm going to just stare him in the face.
he shouldn't be asking anything other that 1) type of gin? 2) sweet or dry? 3) dirty?

Why? When 90% of his customers ask for a martini they want a vodka martini.
Seems like a way to look like an arse to a bartender.

he should condescendingly explain to them that a martini contains gin
