Lowes or home depot. Basically a butane torch. Mapp gas burns a bit hotter and will burn upside down. A bottle last me about a year. I use it 3-4 times a week.

Nice. That's what I'm gonma use from now on rather than the lighter cubes.

How long do you hold in one spot for a good light?

In an average year, about how much charcoal do you go through on the BGE? How does the cost compare to propane?

A 20lb bag of BGE lump will last me at least a month if grilling 3-4 times a week. It goes a long way if you're only lighting once a week.

Royal oak is only $7 bag and Burns just as good.

As for comparing lump to propane...I'm not sure .. I have natural gas on my patio when i do need gas which is very rare.

I hold the torch about 15 to 20 seconds in a spot. I usually dig a small hole in the lump and light it down the hole. I light one spot for low and slow and from 3 to six spots for high temp grilling.
I usually light my fire and go inside and prep my food. Usually when I get back its ready to go.

For a low and slow smoke I will burn about a 3 lbs for an 18 hour cook. For grilling it burns a lot quicker. The nice thing is after a cook shut the vents and the fire goes out, thus saving your unburned charcoal. I probably go thru a $150 worth of charcoal a year. I buy Royal Oak lump at walmart. Royal Oak makes BGE and Primo Brand lump. It s a lot cheaper to buy at walmart.
I am sure the charcoal is a lot more expensive than the propane. My food is also a 100% better than propane too!

Youll be amazed at how easy it is to light charcoal with a torch. First time I used it I was WTF have I been wasting my time for so long.

The cubes light it well but only it one spot unless you use several, which would get expensive quick.

I use to roll a cone out of a paper towel and put a tsp of cooking oil in the cone. Then bury the cone and light the exposed un oiled end. It works well and is very cheap. only draw back is it a bit slow. After work when I want a quick fire the torch is unbeatable.

I usually post on a primo forum. Its one of the better forums Ive seen. You have to register to view but its worth it. Lots of BGE and other types of ceramic cooks post there. If you want to find a great recipe or need advice its a great resource. The posters or all mature and you dont get alot of BS from kids.

I posted it in the other BGE thread, but I'll post it here again. If you're looking for a good lighter, check out the Looft Lighter. They retail around $75-$85, but from the looks of it, that is fairly competitive with the torches (plus you have to refill a torch). The Looft is basically a hairdryer...on steroids...times 1,000,000. My dad has one and it is amazing.

I have serious doubts about this statement.

I don't

I'm not taking anything away from propane, welll maybe I am, but there is absolutely no comparing the two.

Propane = convenience
ceramic cookers = Better food

Plain and simple

cooking with propane you might as well be cooking in the oven IMO... wood and charcoal impart so much more flavor...

ETA:
Try this website They are absolutely the bomb for recipes, ideas, etc... I suggest them to everyone...
