I had a post about this around a week ago. Just go to their websites and find recipes you like. Buy groceries at the store and make great meals and save money. You don't need the service.

$20 a meal is saving money?

Is it really that bad for two people?

$100 a week for everything including toiletries and household products. That also includes everything we need for lunch throughout the work week too.

Where do you live? I find this hard to believe.

Northwest Arkansas. We don’t eat much meat as a family and eat a lot of lentils, chickpeas, and veggies. My wife and I also fast during day quite often so we don’t have breakfast or lunch costs except for kids.

Tonight for example we are doing sweet potatoes topped with an African peanut kale and then cooking some brats for kids and likely have some fruit as well. Maybe 10-12 bucks for the meal ingredients.

We've done Blue Apron for a few years now (married couple who both work full time, no kids). Our routine has been Blue Apron for 3 dinners, plan for 2-3 dinners, and out for 1-2 dinners per week and that has worked well for us.

If the goal is to conveniently pick up some cooking skills, then Blue Apron is worthwhile and a decent gift. The most benefit we've seen is the use of ingredients we otherwise would not have, some of which we've incorporated into our own planned meals.

The other benefit we've seen is a reduction in meal planning. It saves quite a bit of time and energy to go to the store once a week with only a couple recipes in mind, and combined with the Wednesday Blue Apron delivery we can cook reasonably fresh food at any time, no worries.

Having "no waste" is cited as a benefit of meal services due to having no leftovers, but it's really an exchange of waste if you look at how much plastic and cardboard you have to dispose of with Blue Apron. Similarly, you will dirty some dishes with Blue Apron (although, you can save some of that by reading the directions in their entirety before starting).

General Recipe Feedback:

I don't know what oven they test their products in, but we would burn everything if we didn't turn down their suggestions by 25-50 degrees and shave a few minutes off the baking time. It may be our oven that is the problem, but other non-Blue Apron recipes work exactly as directed.

Go ahead and buy a giant jar of minced garlic, it will save you some time. Every month or so make some roasted garlic in the oven.

We use Blue Apron twice a week. It's great for weekday meals and we eat leftovers for lunch.

We spend more than that and we shop deals (2.99/lb chicken breasts and ground chuck at Fresh Market).

I get how we could probably stay under that if we just did a plain grilled protein + vegetable every dinner and something like salad or a sandwich every lunch, but my wife gets bored of that.

That's pretty much our schedule now.

We just started HelloFresh last week. All 4 meals we've eaten so far have been really good. The ribeye with bernaise sauce, with asparagus and fingerling potatoes last night was the best, so far.

I've never used any of them, so I can't tell you what is best. But Indie plate is local.
