and yeah my school had legit enchiladas. i guess the proximity to mexico kinda helped. that government cheese they stuffed those reconstituted corn tortillas with was so good.

Isn't there somewhere down by the WWII museum that does cafeteria style meals?

When I went to school, there were a bunch of Cajun grandmas that cooked our lunches. So damn good.
Beef stew meat with rice & gravy, yeast roll and corn with a Bartlett pear and cheese for dessert was my favorite.
We never had meat on Fridays. We only had fish sticks on Fridays for Lent.
The rest of the time it was Steens syrup Pb sandwiches and vegetable soup.

we had to enter our ID number in the computer in order to get our free lunch. still remember mine, 640774.
Computer! Hell we had a big ole red "I'm Poor" punch card we had to pull out every day. Was scary when that bitch got down to 2 or 3 little punches.

Fifty years back (serious)
Mac and cheese
Elbow Mac the size of your little finger. Big pile of cheddar cheese melted on top fish sticks along side.
I sorta liked the once a week leftover veg soup made with leftover spaghetti sauce and leftover veggies and leftover spaghetti noodles.
They were making those same rolls fifty years back.
I think the wife actually has the school lunch yeast roll recipe.
You can google it I bet.

My number was 631.
It wasn't for free though. We would pay around 100$ at the beginning of the year and it would last basically all school year. If we would start to run low the lunch lady would bitch at us and tell us to bring some more money.
One year I went in the red for about a month. That was one mad lunch lady. I finally brought 20$ to pay her and she told me that I only had 2$ cause I owed 18$.

Same here.
We had bestest, most moistest rice dressing ever made.
It was such a hot commodity, you would trade your dessert with someone in exchange for their dressing.
Almost like cigarettes in prison.

I remember after Gustav. My high school was giving out the stuffed crust pizza they served. It was awesome!!!

Stuffed crust, eh?
There was a time when they served real pizza, and it was good.
Then they went el-cheapo on us and started using hamburger buns open-faced with tomato sauce, pepperoni, and cheese on top. Not nearly as good by a long shot.

In high school we would have this dish that was Pinto beans with ground meat and rice,it was not soupy or mushy, it had a bit of taco seasoning in it but not over powering with fresh rolls. It was really good.

My HS had the greatest creamed chicken and rice. Also had some good tator tots. Used to go all Napoleon Dynamite on those bad boys.

We had pizza like that, but it damn sure wasn't on French bread. We would slather them in ketchup and roll them up. There are days that I wish I could have just one more of those as a student.

Back in elementary school the food was so good. Fried fish, chicken and dumplings, ravioli, the pizza -- it was all solid. By the time I got to high school they started paying attention to what they served based upon some bullcrap government nutrition standards and it all went downhill. Their chicken fried steak was still tasty, though. Always had it with mashed potatoes.
