It was a classic old school divey type place that got a lot of play and notoriety as broadcasters would hang out when they came in town for LSU events
It's appeal came from the backroom, shady, mafioso-type dealings that went on there. It was a place where well-connected, both legally and illegally, went to meet.
I hope I wrong, but I don't see it making it in the long run. The appeal was it kind of being like BR's Copocbana (absent the music), not necessarily the food. Without the cache of it being one of the places for BR's movers and shakers, it's just another seafood place.

i think the last thread on this the old dinosaurs on here chimed in completely debunked some of that.

It hasn't been on government in decades.

shite was more lore than anything. Of course Gus didn't do much to kill it. A bunch of old dudes playing cards is not really "mafioso".
I guess it's fun to pretend it was like something out of Goodfellas, though.

Ask Lester Earl(not the poster) about the place. He knows

Sorry your buddy is a douche bag man but that's just the way it goes.
I know Jordan pretty well and I know some douchebags. Jordan is not a douchebag. He's a young guy who will be working with his older brother to open a restaurant. That's a hard enough job without an asshat like you piling on him on the internet.

No dog in the fight here, but if he can't handle internet criticism then he probably shouldn't be in that industry

I hope they do well. Location should be fine, but they better get the word out when they open. They are sort of out of sight, out of mind back there. I wouldn't depend on their name to carry them.
Just a thought. Have a colorful history write up on the menu about Phil's. It will give the younger crowd something to talk about when they tell other people about their experience. For example, from BR bidness report:
Maybe they should open a small Giamanco's in Table's location when they close. (Sorry to those who like Table. I couldn't resist.)

Phil’s Oyster Bar opened in the mid-1950s on Government Street as a restaurant attached to Phil Tuminello’s Seafood Market. It became a true local favorite in the mid-1970s, when former LSU football team manager Gus Piazza bought a stake in the business and took up its management. Over the years, it became known as much as a haunt for local movers and shakers as for its oyster and fried seafood fare.

From the Advocate:
quote:
The restaurant moved from its Government Street location to a larger space off College Drive in 2002 and remained there until Gus Piazza’s retirement in June 2007. Piazza died five months after the restaurant closed.

I'm looking forward to it opening as well. Jordan is a good guy. Not sure what makes him a douche bag unless the guy has something personal against him.

I agree but criticizing him on a restaurant that hasn't even opened? GTFO with that

Didn't they move it off college for a little while but didn't last?

JP was running it for a few years when Gus' health start to decline. Not sure what happened to be honest, but that location isn't nice to any business that has occupied it, so maybe that potentially ended it. He was a 19 year old running a restaurant so I'm sure he's learned a few lessons.

I don't really know. Thai Kitchen is moving there so let's see what happens.
