I have had it in Schaumburg, IL. It's a fast food hotdog place. Expectations should fit with about Whataburger, Culver's level etc. I'd eat it again.

Went to one nearby there in Elgin and thought the same. It's not going to be the best Italian beef imaginable but it's solid. Burgers are also solid and as someone else mentioned already their ice cream and shakes are top notch.

We’ve been to the one in Katy, as it’s about 15 minutes from our house. It was alright. If you want a great Italian Beef, follow Brett’s BBQ and look for when they have them as a special item. Fricking phenomenal.

I’ve been to the Katy location twice now. First time in just ordered the Italian beef with extra gravy, sweet and hot peppers. The second time I ordered the combo dipped with sweet and hot peppers. Having it dipped made the bread a soggy mess. The French fries with a side of cheese were not worth it. Next time I’ll order the sandwich with extra gravy and hot peppers only.
I thought it was fantastic for what it is.

I agree that it’s way over rated

They got bought out and quality dropped

There are better Italian beef places in Chicago but not sure if they ship

I've had Portillos in Chicago before and thought it was great, but then I had the hot dogs and Italian beef at the Richmond location in Houston and wasn't nearly as impressed. Maybe it was nostalgia for the first time having an Italian beef sub. The hot dog was whatever and overpriced and the Italian beef sub was good, but was kind of bland. I did go during soft opening and haven't gone back so there could have been some quality control issues at the time. I never understood getting it dipped either; It's just a huge soggy mess and a pain to eat. I usually just get it dry with sweet and hot peppers with the gravy on the side and eat it like a French dip.

sticker shock still to me when my family of 5 is like $75 for sandwiches, fries, and a soft drink.

I feel like getting similar at Checkers or Subway would cost me the same.

You can get a good fast food sandwich meal like Chic fil A, Whataburger, etc. for $12 for an adult. My kids are growing, but lets say $36 for 2 adults and an older child, and 2 kids meals should be $5-7 each. We can eat at Chic Fil A for under $50 or right at there.

I'm just saying if you are going to be 50% more ($25 more on $50) then your average good fast food place, the food better be stellar.

If I remember right, one of my knocks on Portillo's is the lack of a kids menu or lack of a drink included. If you don't have a basic nugget, burger, hot dog, mac n cheese, etc. meal for $5-7 that includes a drink that's one of my pet peeves.

You shouldn't have to pay $10 for a 4 year old to eat.

ETA: Another knock of mine and this could be store specific but I've been to 2 stores, was the lack of self service drinks.

Their hot dog is mid. Bunch of tomatoes and other crap that doesnt taste good on a hot dog.

Typical for chicago cuisine.
