and then what?

Well that will be the one year mark of the diet and at that point I will move to maintenance.

Even if I don't reach my goal, I still plan to stop at the one year mark and then maybe at some point in the future after my body has returned to normal I will try to get to my goal.

One year is enough.

That doesn't mean I will run out to taco bell, popeyes and mcdonalds and eat with reckless abandon.

It does mean I will continue to weigh myself every day the rest of my life so when I do creep up in weight from bad meals, I can adjust my diet and creep back down.

That is what I did. I was no longer losing quickly and decided it was time to maintain for a while. Now, I want to get to my goal.

Congrats on the 80 lbs lost Myth that's a legitimate life changer. But fwiw 8 days without loss is not a plateau. You've been at this for quite a few months so you know you can't drop weight overnight. The closer you get to your goal weight, the slower/less your body is going to burn off. Stick with it- change up your caloric intake by a couple hundred calories and try some different workouts. It's all about keeping the brain from getting into a routine!

Do you think that adding muscle increases your metabolism significantly?

Yes, muscle takes more calories to maintain than fat tissue. It's a fact.

I sure hope it's alot! I've been getting up early every morning now for the past 5 weeks working out. My weekly weigh in is tomorrow - I sure hope the scale has gone down. My clothes are definitely looser.

Don't be surprised if it isn't as big of a drop as you expect. Muscle does burn more calories but it also weighs about 3X more than fat, but it is much more dense. It's great that you can feel the difference, just understand why the number may be a little higher than you expect. Keep it up

I was reading some of the earlier posts & noticed your soup comment. I haven't had soup either in a couple of years due to sodium. I found Health Valley no sodium added Minestrone soup at Whole Foods recently. 180 calories for the entire can and 100mg sodium for the can. It's not bad. So glad to be able to eat soup again sometimes. Just thought I'd share.

I learned that canned soup shall never be consumed by me again. One whole can of soup can be up to 5500mg of sodium.

Thanks for the tip.

I solved my soup problem on my own by getting a crock pot.

That way I can control the sodium level. I can make a decent to good tasting chicken soup with nowhere near the sodium level of canned soup.

But, once the weather gets cold, I'll give your idea a try. Oh and with only 100mgs of sodium for the whole can, I could doctor it up if I didn't like the taste and still be well within my sodium goals of 1500mgs a day or less.

2 mile walk was much easier today since the weather was way cooler than yesterday.

OK here is a thought/question for everyone. When you splurge..........do you plan it or just do it?

And what I mean by splurge is eat something that has no redeeming value whatsoever just because the mood hits you.

When I started this diet I told myself that I would occasionally go out with friends or family and I would eat what I wanted with NO guilt.

But no more than one to two outings per month. I have probably averaged about once a month, but I have lived like a hermit.

On top of those are the times I just can't take it and hit the fast food demon.

I think since March, I hit taco bell 5 times, but 4 were all in the same week when I just about gave in around July I think.

The only other time I went nuts, I had planned all along to get pizza while watching the finale of lost. Bought two mediums, one thin crust one regular.

I haven't had an unplanned cheats maybe since July. The guilt after eating was overwhelming.

So the answer to your question, is I have had a few planned outings and a few breakdowns but the longer I got into the diet, the easier it was for me to keep away from breakdowns.

Oh....Thanksgiving is going to be ugly. I told myself back in March I was not going to make myself miserable denying myself.

The good thing is that I really can't eat as much as I used to, so hopefully things won't get too out of hand. I have never been a major desert person so I can skip the pie, but the cornbread stuffing is MINE.....All MINE Precious.

233.4 This morning, lowest I've been so far

Bull shite it's gonna be great. There is no such thing as a diet on Thanksgiving. Everyone knows that gluttony and football are the only proper ways to celebrate a genocide. And if you and I were going to the same Thanksgiving then we'd be fighting over momma's cornbread dressing

Yesterday I ate 1589 calories and I actually got to the gym and did an upper body workout. Good workout, not great.

I think I got the scale problem taken care of. I weighed myself three times and all three showed the same weight, 232.4/226.0.

This weekend is going to be bad. Going to a friends BBQ, so there will be a bunch of eating and drinking. If I can limit to Saturday only I think I will be alright.

Just remember that since you are lifting weights you will be putting on muscle. So the scale may not move as fast as you like but of course the benefits in the end are much much better.

I try to plan any splurges. For example, I know that Nov. to Dec. will not be easy. I already plan to eat some of the treats that inevitably show up at the office -- but only the ones that are low in carbs, like pistachios (we get huge amounts every year from a client). I pretend the other treats, cakes, etc. fell on the floor & were put back on the plate or whatever. It grosses me out & I don't get tempted.

For 2 years I have done this without any weight gain, so I guess it works. As for Thanksgiving & Christmas Day meals, I enjoy whatever I want in moderation knowing that I will get back on track the next day. Food tastes soooo much better when it's a splurge once in a while, I find, and sometimes it just doesn't live up to the expectation. Even when I have an uplanned splurge, I am ready to get back on track after a few days when I start to feel and look bad from not eating healthy.

Good luck to you!

Last Tuesday 10/19/10, I hit 200lbs for the first time in my life. Being only 5'9", that's a lot to carry around.

Wednesday 10/20/10 I started the "eat less move more" plan.

Today 10/29/10 I weighed in at 196lbs.

This thread should serve as motivation to keep it going.

Well, I had my weekly weigh-in this a.m. and have been dreading it even though my clothes have felt looser. This week, I had a lapse in self control on several occasions when I went out to lunch with a friend. Fortunately, my morning workout saved me, although no weight loss for the week. I am back on track today. Good luck to all!

I understand. It is also a reason why I carry my weight well. Most people did not believe I was over 230lbs. It is also usually an all or nothing deal. I have a hard time going to the gym with out eating right and vice versa.

That is so awesome. Congratulations on your low. What exactly are you doing to lose?
