This is pretty much unrelated, but some smart person I know once told me that the way you order wine at a restaurant is to choose the second to least expensive one, which will usually be the best value.

That's cRaZy.

Scotches are so different that it all depends your preferred taste. I like speysides and highlands, 18 year olds over 12, single malts over blends. The only scotch I couldn't finish was Talisker, it tast like campho-phenique. If I can find an 18 y/o for less than $120 I'm happy

Do 18yrs generally have a more amber tone than 12s?

Have you had Laphroaig?

Do a search on F&D. Weekly topic. More informed responses.

Interesting. I'll try that if you'll try:

It's hard to describe how I feel about this one. It's not my favorite, but I think every serious Scotch drinker should try it. It's pretty extreme. Peat. Huge peat. Think: running across a dewy field with your tongue lapping the grass.

It is hard to compare posters in F&D, OT and the Rant, but I am an advocate of keeping things in the right place. causes less confusion.

I usually am too, but for example, if I wanted to talk to normal people about a movie and not movie snobs, I'd rather post it here.

Highland Park 12 is pretty solid for around $40

Yep...I think the HP 15 is a better value though. Much smoother for about $60.

Awesome! That's my daily scotch of choice. Not many people drink it but I love it.

Agreed about Laphroaig. Got a bottle above my fridge now. Definitely a fan of Talisker and you can't go wrong with most of the MacCallans. Next time i'm at Duty Free and it's not an insane time in the morning i'm picking up a bottle of JW Blue. About 375 for the big boy.

I've always been a bourbon guy, but I recently bought my first bottle of scotch. I went cheap and got the speyburn 10 year.... At first I thought it was terrible (the taste of scotch in general) but after drinking it more it really grew on me. Next time I want to get something decent, maybe mccallens, to see what it tastes like.

Drinking some now. It's a good bang/buck. Good mixture of peat and fruit tones. Where'd you get it, it's pretty hard to find. A local grocery here has an insane scotch selection and that's the only place I've seen it.

Scotch is a tough one for me. I'm content with Glenlivet but the best I have ever had was Johnny Walker Blue. The difference in the two isn't worth the price difference, IMO.

Glenlivets 21 is great

12 and 18 are awesome too, but I honestly go with 12 more often given the choice at the restaraunt
