I keep Triple Sec, Rose's lime juice and grenadine on hand.. Club soda goes flat quickly, so I but it, when I need it.

Good adds, and since unlisted yet, and using some this past weekend in making some Sangria..and being excellent to cook and also do fancy desserts with..

1. Does any liquor ever expire? I have some old tequillas in the cabinet...

2. I am guessing Margarita mix expires at some time, right? I have three Jose Cuervo margarita mix bottles in the cabinet, and I can't remember the last time I bought them...probably 3+ years...

1. If the liquor has never been opened it's probably still good, provided it has not been exposed to extreme temperatures (especially heat). If they've been opened for several years then chances are they're not going to be very good.

2. Margarita mixes DO expire. They're usually good for around a year or so...perhaps a bit more.

Fwiw, Jose Cuervo margarita mix is not very good IMO. The best Margarita mix I've ever used (and I've tried them all) is Mr. & Mrs T. It's all I use now. Not all of their mixes are as good as their margarita mix, but their margarita mix is superb.

Here's a good recipe using the Mr. & Mrs. T mix:

4 1/2 ounces Mr. & Mrs. T Margarita mix.

1 1/2 ounces of a good 100% agave tequilla (like the Sauza Hornitos)

3/4 ounce Triple Sec (I use Hiram Walker...it has a higher alcohol content than most other triple secs).

Put into a martini shaker with crushed ice. Shake for 40 shakes, then strain through a strainer into a chilled Margarita glass.

Enjoy!

Liquor - stuff that's ~ 80 proof and up - should keep indefinitely even after opened, provided it's not stored in direct sunlight or been subject to extreme heat.

Liqueurs and fortified wines are more volatile and could turn on you after a time.

It's not a question of spoiling. We're not talking about an unopened bottle here. We're talking about one that has been opened and some of the liquor already consumed. The long term exposure to oxygen negatively affects the taste of the liquor. Unless you're broke, why drink it?

Have you ever thrown just a splash of Cointreau on top of that?

Use the Cointreau in lieu of the triple sec . . .

I've used Cointreau instead of the triple sec, but I''ve never used both together. Interesting.

As for this recipe, I absolutely love Cointreau, but I think the triple sec actually works better than the Cointreau with a mix.

On the other hand, if I'm making an authentic Margarita with fresh lime juice then I only use Cointreau. Triple sec just won't do.

I'm saying with stuff at the higher proofs it doesn't matter . . . unless the bottle was left opened. The limited amount of air in an even almost empty bottle shouldn't negatively affect the flavor of hard liquor.

i've had opened bottles of liquor (bourbon, rum, vodka) on my shelf for years sometimes and never once noticed a difference in taste. not saying there isn't some taste change but i doubt it is enough for the average person to notice.

I don't know what you mean by "shouldn't," but I guarentee you it does.

We'll agree to disagree. I kept a bottle of W.L. Wellers Special Reserve for 3 years and two moves. It lived in the liquor cabinet in a cool place and when we moved it went in the suitcase. I drink it neat and never noticed a difference.

With wine, most definitely, but with booze stored dark and cool, not at all, IMO.

One word of advice here - Kalunda. If he borrows TP and drinks your Bud Dry. Well you catch my drift.

I don't (think) so, although, I know wine does if opened. I found some old vodka in the hunting camp, probably been there since the 70's. It made some good screw drivers...
I've done extensive scientific research, and those bottles had been opened before..Tasted fine.

Me too. I'm the scientist in charge of quality control of old half empty liquor bottles and I haven't found a bad one yet.

They will evaporate though.

Me neither! It was either to drink em, or make a malatov cocktail, and I couldn't find a damn thing around there that needed to be blown up!
Capeesh ?

ok, here's the deal, I promise... Go buy some George Dickle, forget about Charter, maybe keep a bottle around the house for emergencies like snakebite, sore throat, or coughing fits and mainly for when you run out of Dickle...
