I don't have a sense of humor but you come on the food board to whine about paying two extra bucks for produce? Yeah dude I bet you're a blast to hang out with.

But $2 dollars here and $2 dollars there really adds up. I would probably add about $20 to $30 a week to my grocery bill if I shopped at WF all the time.

If you ever get a chance, try their Berry Chantilly cake - it is amazing.

I rate it up there with anything from Zoes or Ambrosia,etc.. I find it similar to an Italian Wedding Cake, if it were topped with fruit. Love it!

their cheese selection (here in nasvhille) simply

blows.
my.
mind.

i've never seen so much cheese in a supermarket ever.

having said that..i ran away immediately since i can neither afford cheese from the weight-gain aspect nor the hurt it would put on my wallet to buy it there.

A truly great piece of aged Pecorino Romano, Parmigiano Reggiano, Gruyere, Mahon, Brie, or Feta cheese, can be life-changing.

I think most of the appeal here is trendy rather than savvy. Healthy foods are important, but I get around that by avoiding processed foods. Southside produce and Fresh Pickins will always be my 'go to' vegetable places and Sam's my butcher shop. Calandro's, Calvin's, Red Stick Spice, Maxwell's Market also get some of my business, but none of those have enough selection for all my needs. I prefer local guys when I can.

this is how i feel about it in a nut shell. i usually buy produce at south side produce. i go to the farmer's market and get seasonal stuff. i buy proteins from calandros usually.

i usually reserve whole food trips for when im craving their fresh seeduction bread or smiths creamery milk or very specific items that i cant find at other grocery stores. i rack up on the bulk aisle here and there too

It's a first class vs. coach kind of thing. Some people see the value in the experience others don't. As many have pointed out the hot foods are a pretty decent value, and the dairy/cheese/breads are good also. If you care about healthy or happy cuts of meat, Fresh Market is usually cheaper.

They have the best fish selection in BR, and it's always fresh, but I generally just go to Maxwell's across the street if that's all I'm getting.

same here ... i still buy my meats, chickens, and fish from maxwell's .. but i do buy a few things at whole foods and like their prepared foods .. i was actually there yesterday afternoon too and andouille is right .. it was ridiculously packed ... with the tight aisles i think i got whacked about four times by the hand baskets the 280 pound women were waving around ... i also buy hard to find produce there and their fruit is incredible ... i have been a number of times over the years there and i must always go on the wrong days, because i just don't seem to see this MILF bonanza everyone else sees in there .. just 280 pound women swinging hand baskets and 95 pound ecclectic "look at me! i ran a 1/2 mile this morning in my $235 running gear i am wearing in WF to make you think i am healthy" chicks that look malnourished ... maybe i need to look around more ..

I've never been in there and not seen an attractive girl. And I'm not even talking Bocage moms, but girls in their 20's and 30's.

Agreed. That's why you have to be careful about what you buy there.. I do though, get all my fish, chicken, fruit, berries, and most greens at WF.. Staples milk, coffee, bread.. grocery stores closer to home.

the chick in front of me yesterday in the checkout line had run up a $308 tab and had maybe 6 bags total in her basket ... looked like she bought everything there .. coffee, bread, eggs .. and a load of produce .. with a lot of that organic stuff .. you have to eat it pretty fast or it spoils pretty quickly ... i usually cap myself at about $75 to $100 in there ..

Here's the thing. WF has some items I can't find easily elsewhere, and some items are simply of better quality.

I agree. Pretty much the only thing I go to Whole Foods for is tortilla chips.. because they're the only store who sells the ones like you get in mexican restaurants (thin, crispy, slightly oily, and not much salt)

I get the perception but a gallon of milk is as cheap or cheaper at Whole Foods.

If you are not trying to feed a large family and are not buying a bunch of pre-cooked stuff, WF isn't that bad compared to if you were to go to your average store. Just cut out one out to eat a month and you have more than made up the difference in price.

Well that's pretty close.

When I was in my thirties , getting married, getting careers going, family, mortgages, tuition, etc...I was a master of Wal-Mart making ends meet etc...that is kind of how it really goes. Then you kind of hit your stride, start knocking down some cash, little disposable income, appreciate wine for what it really is meant to be, lamb chops appear, cheese that you would think "I could eat all week at Subway" per pound become a staple in your OUTSIDE fridge and your kids are playing with other kids who have trust funds and private jets.

Then in your fifties you settle back a bit, enjoy the summer condo/home whether it is Gulf Shores or Scotsdale doesn't matter because there is a Whole Foods there And your interest in caviar and leeks is wandering but your wife is into a fresh beet and goat cheese salad ( probably not because your fifties will be more advanced in food-beets if your gal is fifty in the next three years. )

Then your sixties roll around and you hope your daughter married well enough to keep from digging to deep in your pockets and the guy she marries isn't on a board similar to this in witch every second post says "pics". And all you can think about is the old friends you had nice dinners with that are dead.

Seventies come and you just hope that's not Parkinsons that you just had to much cheap wine (because the family fortune is just about gone and Little Obama ain't promising anything)

Eighties come and you can't keep your peas on the fork. Much Less keep from crapping your pants.

Little later you die.

No shite. When I'm 80 I hope I have the presence of mind to demand a damn spoon for my peas. Preferably a big arse spoon with steep sides.

I hope if I live to be 80 that I'm still eating whole peas as opposed to baby food or getting tube feedings.
