This industry is a fricking shite show for a ton of different reasons. There are good games that come out but they are way way way more few and far between than only like a decade ago.

So many people have so many different motivations and reasons in the industry from devs wanting to put propaganda to execs wanting to leach players dry of money to massively bloated teams and way more.

It needs at least a partial crash and reset. AAA does at least. They’re so far out of touch it’s insane

Just to not be a doomer some games like RE9 Phantom Blade Zero and a few others coming this year look very good. The state of play had some good stuff. Then the chuckle fricks follow that up with shuttering blue point. Close bungie instead maybe?

I dunno man...they used to churn out a high volume of shite games back in the day. Especially in the NES era where they would basically resuse assets and reskin games (Duck Tales, Chip n Dale, Darkwing Duck....as one example). It's more visible now because of the internet and social media, but there was a LOT of dreck back in the 90s and 00s.

I think the biggest issue is that shite like Call of Duty and Madden print money.
The fact that COD:BO finished 5th on that list is a win for gamers

BO6 was the top selling game of 2024, iirc

I was just coming here to say FF was GETTING watered down with 11, 12

what's weird is I think 12 had some potential but I could just never get through it. Tried to play the zodiac age 2 or 3 times a few years after release and only made it a few chapters each time

I liked 12 a lot. Matsuno stepping away from it probably had something to do with it not being as good as it could have been, but I still liked it. It’s been a long long time since I played though

The gambit system is why i wanted to play it. I think if i had bought it when it first came out i woulda beat it, but going back and trying to emulate it never panned out. It came out my freshman year of college so i missed it completely.

Never could get into Nioh myself and I love that genre of game. I think it’s just the way the whole thing comes together that doesn’t jive with me to hot.

My most excited for game this year is phantom blade zero. It looks absolutely fricking sick the just did like a 45 min gameplay showcase a few days back. It launches September 6.

Then there’s the worst kept secret in the world that sometime this year we will be getting a Witcher 3 expansion to bridge the narrative gap between it and 4. There’s massive evidence for this I can tell peeps if they want it. Idk when crimson desert is coming but it looks awesome.

Anyone know what fromsoft is cooking other than their weird switch 2 exclusive extraction game?

There's a lot of parallel between Dragon Age Veilguard and FF 16. FF 16 just as much stronger writing.

Honeslty the biggest indicator of how fricked we are was when Christopher Judge mocked the length of that year's CoD campaign at the game awards, and a butthurt CoD goes on twitter bragging about CoD's "player engagement metrics" treating it like it's some kind of massive gotcha moment.

At one point in time you had people with passion making video games. Now you have corporate drones.

The zone/hub structure, maybe?

FF16 was closer to what Veilguard should have been

Dark, engaging story.

Magic users are seen as dangerous beings to be enslaved for the public good.

Not many parallels. What am I missing?

It’s weirdly become a thing recently on the internet in many places to shite on FF16 I don’t get it.

Most people here likely know FF is my favorite franchise but I’ve been very critical of them. I do think rebirth was extremely good and FF15 on the gameplay side is by far imo the worst FF ever.

FF16 is what I’d call a good game. A 7.5/10 but it likely has the most missed potential of any FF ever and some serious flaws. The combat is too easy, the structure isn’t great, important side characters and party members other than Sid lack depth and connection to the player, and there’s more you could say.

The combat is still fun and doesn’t stagnate truly until the literal end of the game into the dlc with the new eikons. Veilgaurds combat overstayed its welcome after an hour.

Veilgaurd is a total failure and awful game. Comparing it to 16 is ludicrously bad. The actual main story of 16 is pretty dam well written, I know some things behind the scenes and they had to leave a bunch of stuff on the cutting floor that I think people would have much wanted and I’ve seen complained about it lacking a lot that being a much deeper dive into the politics of the realm which gets more or less totally dropped at a point. That did exist but was removed from the game for certain reasons
