I’m not going to pretend I will build it myself.

Alienware seems expensive for what you get.

Looking at Newegg website and MSI. Looks like some decent computers around $1,200 which is about the budget.

Is MSI good? Any better recommendations?

I’ll defer to others regarding prebuilts, but with that said: don’t buy an Alienware. Many of the core components are proprietary, so if one of those proprietary components fail in the future, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to replace.

Pay a local high school kid $100 and call it a day and you'll still end up ahead. The problem with pre-builts is they make their margins on lower quality motherboards and hard drives. Worth picking higher quality components that have warranties and you know exactly what you are getting. I promise if youve ever put together a lego set or worked on a truck you can put together a computer. It may take you 3 or 4 hours but if something does mess up you'll know how to replace it

If you don't feel comfortable building it yourself, you may be able to pay a local computer shop to build you one if you called and asked. That's really the only way you know you're gonna get quality parts (PSU, Motherboard) is to buy them individually yourself and build it/have it built for you. It's definitely a rewarding feeling to do it yourself if you can. Like someone else said, you will also know how to replace parts if needed.

I can help you build one if you want. Most previous are pretty trash value, may want to look into a secondhand that someone else built

ibuypower.com is where I've bought my last 3, 1 desktop and 2 laptops. I like them because you can find one you like, and upgrade/downgrade as needed or just build your own.

Then they build them and you don't have to worry about if shite is compatable etc.

Building PC's is like adult Legos. It's actually really easy.

As the others stated, unless you gave some money to burn, buy your own parts and let somebody put it together for you

I will always vouch for Jawa.gg for buying a pre-built. It's a marketplace of PC builders from around the country and you can usually find a good deal in the price range you are looking for. The sellers I've interacted with are all responsive to any questions, so if you have any questions on how the PC will perform on specific games, send them a message. They should arrive assembled, so all you need to do is remove the packing material and plug in if you aren't into building it yourself.

May help to list your spec requirements if looking for retail recommendations on here. What games will he be playing?

i have a prebuilt. After doing a fair amount of research is went with Redux. I found the shopping and customizing experience good. I felt the price was fair. the Build is VERY clean. My brother who builds his owns was impressed with it and the components they used (ie, not complete garbage).

so i would recommend them.

i went with a prebuilt because zero percent of a cpu build seems fun to me. From the components listing, purchasing, organizing, then physical build. i have 0 interest and my time is more valuable than wanting to learn and do any of it. hats off to you guys who do.

EDIT:
I just went to the redux website because i was curious how they are pricing these days. Maybe im completely missing it but it doesn't look like you can customize a build anymore. It use to be that you could pick every detail of the build. Type of fans, power supply, ram, etc etc.

now it looks like its all just buy as is. I dont think i would recommend them anymore.

Buy him a 410 or a weight set instead of a gaming computer

Otherwise get ready for him to be living with you at 30

Somewhat true. I actually built my first PC out of old parts my uncle's work no longer needed. I had no idea what I was doing and it took me many hours, but as far as the parts went, it was near impossible to get them wrong. This was decades ago, so the biggest problem was having disks with drivers etc.

But I can never do cable management the way I get my prebuilt ones. I pay extra for it. The inside of my PC is very clean, where as the ones I do myself have cables all over the place.

Just get a case that runs them all the cables through the back/underneath the mobo. No cable management autism required!

I actually enjoy the cable management puzzle, but cases built like Lian Li make it so easy that you almost have to try to frick it up
