Spent some time last night running around collecting random bits and bobs that I missed while doing standard progression on the first map. Got stuck on one of the later bosses to the north.
While running around aimlessly, I started equipping Crucible weapons to unlock crucible skills (they can be used for any other weapon of that type once you max familiarity on a crucible weapon).
After doing that for a while, I went back and beat the brakes off the yokai general a-hole and now I'm progressing into another crucible.
Think my nioh rust has finally shaken off. Feels good, man.

I hit a serious wall last night with the hot yokai boss in the snow zone. I do so little damage to her that I guess I'm underleveled. I went to the East area and killed the dude with the yokai toybox, he was pretty tricky too. Just feel like I'm underleveled in general

Progressed into second map/zone. Made some good progress. Went back to 1st map with some new guardian traversal skills and hit a few spots I couldn't hit previously.
Y'all come across the Demon of Pride yet? So much fun.

Yeah he basically one shotted me so I dipped and said I'll come back later.
Cleared the 2nd map. Good difficulty spike for 2 of the bosses. The loop I find myself in is this: I never check loot I pick up until I die to a boss a few times. After a few deaths, I check my loot and find I have way better shite, then I beat the boss first or second try.
3rd map is just one big linear level, was about to finish before I called it a night. I think there's just one more big open map after this but it's still not as big as the first one.
Not sure if yall are familiar with Japanese historical figures and their general history, but to put into context how absurd the stories are in these games: it's the Japanese equivalent of teaming up with George Washington and Ben Franklin to fight Abraham Lincoln with spirit animals over magic rocks

I had some inkling that Team Ninja was using actual historical figures and historical events to craft the narrative of these games.
Seems like it's a similar case with Wo Long/China and Rise of the Ronin/19th century Japan.
I don't know enough about Asian history, so it's mostly lost on me but the parallel with American figures makes it pretty funny to consider.

Fairly sure I'm in the last major zone of the game which has been a very fun and wild ride already. Seems bigger than the original zone to me, or at least comparable.
Late game ninjutsu is also very wild in terms of damage output and utility. Some of the combo videos I've seen have given me a lot of ideas as well.
Twitter link with proof of concept of some ideas. He limited his damage intentionally to showcase some stuff, but the ideas are applicable to bosses as far as I can tell.

A very weird (unintended?) mechanic has been discovered:
Keep an empty weapon slot if you're using Ninjutsu - Reddit
It also apparently works for omnyo.
quote:
Did some testing. The damage of your Ninjutsu is based off your currently equipped Base Damage.
So for example, Dual Sword users will output **much** less than a Sword User. But you know what beats both of those? Your fists.
Switch to an empty weapon slot and watch as you gain a damage Spike on your throwables. Massive if you're using high dps low base damage weapons.

Kunimatsu is such a broken fricking boss. Dogshit game design. I've got him down to 1hp a million fricking times but he can end you with one broken combo if you make the slightest mistake.
ETA: Of course I ended up beating him on my sloppiest attempt
Not joking, I had at least 5 attempts where I successively parried him down to 1/8hp only without using any elixirs for him to one-shot me with his beyblade combo or his BS grab at the last second. On this one I got fed up and said frick it and equipped a sloth talisman, but all it did was mess me up with his parry/shift counters. Wouldn't recommend it

Took this guy out last night. Just spamming all kinds of horseshite out of his magic box. What an a-hole.

I’m there day one
Just made it to the third area. I gotta say, all I heard at launch was how much easier this one is. I must absolutely suck

Cleared the base game including the boss rushes. Now on to the NG+ build crafting.
Now that I've had a lot more time with the new systems and flow, I'm very impressed with what Team Ninja did here considering they were following up Nioh 2. This game has even more mechanical depth, and it's not meaningless depth either. I'm already looking forward to the DLCs adding more wild stuff to play around with.
I also think a lot of the new bosses are just all around cool and fun to fight. Only two really stuck out to me as somewhat obnoxious, and I've enjoyed the rest otherwise. I had a good time with Rise of the Ronin which is when they first took a stab at the open world esque approach, so I figured I would have a good time with it here now that they have refined it a bit.

quote:The difficulty curve in this one is a bit different. The first two had a large spike with a boss very early meant to check if you learned how to play the game at all. After that, it calms down since you know what you're doing to some degree.

This one doesn't really have that and just gets gradually more difficult overall as you go. It's a smoother difficulty progression rather than a spiky one. That said, if you try to learn and use the systems, you'll make it through

Oh yeah, I’ll be fine. That was mostly tongue in cheek. I’ve got hundreds of hours in the Nioh series. Nothing will top Maria on WotD. Brutal.

Just got through the third area.
Once I locked in, it hasn’t been too bad difficulty curve wise.
Hope the fourth area is longer than the third.

I am getting absolutely wrecked by Jakotsu Baba. I had her down to one hit once and my damn Great Dane comes and jumps in my lap. About 50 tries later and I havent gotten close again.

It definitely is, but it's not as good IMO.
