It had dated graphics when it came out but the whole reason it existed was to give people without powerful computers a game to play.

That is why I played it. I had an old computer that couldn't play anything and Runescape was a HUGE browser based game with endless amounts of content to play.

It amazes me that with ancient graphics people are still joining up for the first time.

It’s fun as frick. It was never about the graphics. All the other MMOs feel like they were largely centered around combat. This game has some great combat, bossing, and raids, but a huge emphasis on skilling that felt different than what was in WoW

ETA: also it can be pretty AFK and people working from home can easily be gaining levels while working.

Metal of Honor Allied Assault was legit - thanks for bringing that up. Haven’t thought of that series in years. That’s EA right?

Its the only game I play consistently and always recommend. OSRS is better than ever with consistent weekly updates and a dev team that actually listens to the player base. I have never seen a game studio so in touch with the players. There are also zero micro transactions outside of something called a bond which is used for membership.

The skill ceiling is absurdly high, but you could also have fun playing it Old School style and just sitting at a tree, or a fishing spot. Ironman mode is your true old school experience but I wouldn’t recommend that if you’re just starting again.

Also, mobile is the same experience as desktop, its a great app.

Tons of extremely creative YouTube content/series if you just want to throw something on in the background.

10/10 dopamine addiction, especially since mobile launched years ago.

Thats actually the charm, the art style just doesnt really age compared to other MMOs, kind of like prerendered graphics having that nice feeling. There are GPU heavy plugins that enhance that look for more modern times, and there are others like 117 HD that make the game look at lot more visually appealing to a new audience. Jagex has been doing a serious engine overhaul and I am sure we will continue to see more modern visuals as options to appeal to more players.

Gielinor Games by Soup on YT is like an RS elimination gameshow. Has a few seasons and its just very fun.

LINK

This is probably the most famous series. Morytania only UIM ending w/ ToB. Settled, that YTer, has a lot of various series' he has done.

LINK

AColdOne going for GM on a HCIM

LINK

Coxies series where he is getting all pets on a fresh acct is ongoing. A bunch of speed run tech/tick manipulation strats

LINK

Ingus basically just grinding the shite out of bosses going for max gear

LINK

Le Mois PVP World locked HCIM series, my current favorite due to the stakes

LINK

Guy playing the game w/ zero guides. Very popular, was nominated for an award last year by the company.

LINK

B0atys current HCIM series (the legend who basically got ironman created as a game mode)

LINK

This series is older but I enjoyed it, everytime he got a pet he sold his bank and staked it at the duel arena. A lot of resets

LINK

Mudkip does a lot of Ironman series, this one is his duo GIM group which is still going. Just years of progress to follow along with

LINK

Pure fricking autism. limpwurts extreme one chunk, its very entertaining. A lot of other one chunk accts can be found on YT. Varlamore one chunk (that guy did colo/sol with shite gear), Fremmy one chunk

LINK

Nooblets older various ironman series' are a staple

LINK

He Box Jonge & JCWs max cape speed runs.

LINK

LINK

WoW player blindly playing an ironman

LINK

J1mmy, Josh isn't gaming, Jeporite are some other names w/ series ongoing.

Those are the ones I can think of that are fairly entertaining. I play an end game ironman sending raids/new content so normally anything I watch is just iron/hcim related

I never played old school because there was simply no way I was going to start a new character when all of my time and money were invested in the original game. I log in from time to time just to listen to some of the old music and see if anyone has hacked my 2.5 billion in loot.

Eye candy being a priority over gameplay has been on the wane, I blame a lot of that on the big push to F2P years ago and how that ended up with lots of games focusing on aesthetics more than gameplay or story because those were the things which sold.

As long as we're in a big price spike on memory, it wouldn't surprise me to see other older games like this (Ultima Online, EQ, City of Heroes, etc) see a bit of a resurgence as well.

Just mentioned Corr in my current clan's discord. They were curious your ingame name back then. A lot of our "oldheads" were from Corruption.

I just logged into my account from 2002

It lets you log onto the site with your old username but the character is gone? I got nothing. Dumb, I was excited to play. I'm not starting a character from scratch.
