My son is spoiled by the app. Dude rips packs all time only to get nothing and be upset about it lol I've tried to explain rarity in the real world, but it doesn't register.

I’ve been buying one booster box from each set for a few years and stashing them. When my son turns 7-8, we are going to open them all together.

That's a cool idea. What set did you start at?

I started doing this in 2021 with Evolving Skies. I have only missed a few here and there. I snagged so many Japanese sets when I went to Japan this past summer.

I have a local card shop that knows me well and why I’m doing it, so they always hold one box for me.

Evolving Skies is a great set. Unfortunate with what happened with the inside robbery job of the big hitters in the set, but still a great set nonetheless.

I need to start doing this for my little guy

My kids love it--but they aren't too big on keeping stuff sealed

That said, I have managed to stash away one of every PC ETB of the S&V era through most recent set and also a few booster boxes here and there. Looking at historical trends, they should all be worth at least $1k each by the time my kids start college so that's cool. Hell a lot of them are in the $500 range right now.

Cracking packs are a great way to lose money.

It’s a simple game of pattern recognition. The only way to make it work is to purchase by the case(s).

The hit probability is listed on the back of the pack, and there’s an entire industry that tracks patterns and print runs. If there’s one hit per case and it can’t be immediately extracted by weight, then the boxes are opened until it’s found…then the rest of the boxes in the case get unloaded onto collectors community, who notoriously search for the secondary hits, reseal the boxes and packs and then move them along to internet marketplaces like Amazon where they file returns because there’s no scrutiny.

I open everything on principle. It’s for fun and collecting. I chase alternate art rares the most, they’re my favorite. Love the Japanese sets. I might try and master set phantasms flames as it’s the one I’m closest to completing. Made the mistake of trading in one of the chases before I decided to do this but it wasn’t the number 1 chase card

This is what I've been doing. I'll also typically snag a couple of the elite trainer boxes and stash those as well. They all live in my bedroom closet right now. Dunno if/when I'll open them. I worry about the value not really increasing since they're printing so many and they are being so heavily collected.

Don't want it to be like all the 90s basketball cards I still have that are mostly worthless.

It won't ever get that bad since the Pokemon IP is so big, but it'll get there one day.

Modern Pokemon is in such a boom right now, it's insane, especially some of those illustration rare prices. Give me some of those Skyridge and Aquapolis holos all day. Hell, even expedition

My son is into it, I buy multiples when I see them in the wild or online. We rip some and then saving the rest as a sealed collection.

Maybe will be worth nothing, maybe he can use for college later or maybe we rip them in 10 years. Not a big deal for us money wise, cards are a fun hobby for us. Son just pulled the mega charizard SIR recently, was a priceless memory

My oldest is into Yu Gi Oh and he rips most of his. It is fun to see that joy when they pull a cool rare or a card they can use to win a tourney.
