Dammit, anyone who doesn't rank 2 at the top of their list needs their head examined.

2 gets a strange deal from fans & casuals.
Fans hated it for years. It was so hated it killed sales of MGS3. Now, it’s almost universally beloved as post-modern art. Casuals seemed to love the gameplay, but found everything else about it just Japanese designers being Japanese designers and ignored the story/themes.
I enjoyed the themes. I just found the writing to be awful and the Big Shell was a boring environment. The tanker chapter was brilliant; may have affected my judgment of the plant chapter.

The gameplay itself of MGS2 was fun and engaging and I liked it.
The reasons everyone hated everything else about it was pretty simple:
1. The Raiden con. That's right con is the correct word. Snake is on the cover of the game. Snake was front and center in all the pre-launch advertising. It was clear Konami knew people wanted Snake and went out of their way to hide the fact Snake was barely in the game and you'd be playing as a different main character. It was purposeful deception and people were rightfully angry about it. People felt tricked. Intentionally deceiving your customers about your product is not going to get that product well received.
2. Raiden is a girly sissy boy. You go from Snake, this cool grizzled tough guy to this foo-foo pansy anime boy. He looks more likely to be the lead singer in a boy band, not this highly trained special forces dude. His looks and personality appeals way more to Japanese audiences than to Western ones.
3. The storyline went into outerspace (once again, heavy Japanese/anime influence). MGS1's storyline was pretty damn grounded. Sure it had some slightly colorful elements and scifi splash here and there, but fundamentally it felt real. Like this was an actual covert military special ops thing going on. It was Rambo meets James Bond meets Die Hard. It came across as semi-believable. They did a complete 180 in tone in the very next game. It was all the sudden EXTREMELY weird and out there.
Those are 3 pretty damning things that hit you in the face like a ton of bricks so it's no surprise it sparked a huge outcry.
In fact, I distinctly remember an interview someone did with Kojima after talking about how upset all the fans were and he said essentially "It's my Metal Gear and I'll ruin it if I want to." He knew a lot of his choices would be super unpopular and didn't care. You can give him credit for artistic integrity I guess, but including stuff in your game you know your customers will hate is strange.
It just had way too much of a weird Japanese anime feel for most people and wasn't in line with what people wanted or expected.
If you can get past those 3 things and focus just on the gameplay of MGS2, you appreciate it a lot more.

All the main console MGS games I love and I was still a kid when MGS2 came out. I loved it then and I love it now. I love all the console MGS games. MGS2 is still my 2nd favorite PS2 game after MGS3. But that Plant chapter, I agree. Boring environment, boss battles were too easy. I don’t mind the AI stuff with Campbell being an AI glitching and all that. It was just a huge departure from the tanker chapter. Shadow Moses was just a better setting in the first game.
I don’t mind Raidan now but not in love with him. I own Revengeance on Steam and I can’t even play it, it’s just not what I want in a MGS game.

I enjoy them all but some make better games than movies and some make better movies than games. I suppose if you average out those 2 elements, Snake Eater is my favorite.
Best story
1. MGS3: Snake Eater
2. MGS1
3. MGS2: The Sons of Liberty
4. MGS: Peace Walker
5. MGS4: Guns of the Patriots
6. MGS5: Ground Zeroes / The Phantom Pain

the manipulation of information is a huge theme for the game. i didn't get it as a kid, but i think it's amazing now when i look back at it.
It was my first MGS, so i wasnt super attached to Snake or anything either.

The boss fights in any MGS game shine in hard mode. If you haven't played through any of these games in hard you really need too.
For example in MGS2 the fight against the Fat Man (the bomb placing guy) on normal is pretty much a straight forward bore that's almost impossible to fail on.
On hard it's intense, he's much faster and places bombs all over the place and you're scrambling like mad to keep up. It's been many years but I'm pretty sure I did it first try on normal mode and failed it a bunch of times on hard before doing it.

I’ll never fight at The End in MGS3 on hard mode lol
Fatman was a great boss. Similar to someone who would have been on Foxhound, given that Dead Cell was supposed to replicate them since the plant was supposed to be a recreation of Shadow Moses

Never played the PSP one that's canon. MGS on GBC was actually great but that's Ghost Babel.

Peace Walker? I have it in the HD collection for PS3 but unfortunately it's just the PSP game ported to the PS3, very awkward gameplay.

I played it for an hour and said never again.

Yeah it just played awkward on console. I'm sure PSP was a different experience. Would love for Konami to make it into a console game like MGS3 but I'm sure there's no chance for that happening.

1) MGS3 - One of the best games I have ever played. Period.
2) MGS5 - I just started playing last week. So far, I’m in love. All the classic MGS with a new open world. And I love building up Mother Base.
ETA: I only have one gripe: Why does Snake have to have a horn on his head.
3) MGS2 - One of the first games I played on the PS2. One of my all time favorite games. I know Raiden gets knocked down a lot, but I personally liked him.
4) MGS4 - I only played the first hour or so. I can’t give a ton of feed back.
5) MGS1 - Never played it. But I really want to.

The End may be my favorite boss fight in any game.
The fact that you could beat him in about 20 different ways either through skill, brute force, patience, or just setting your game clock...
But taking him on in a sniper duel was so fun. Like the Sniper Wolf fight on steroids.

The hardest death scene to watch is when Jack has to kill The Boss.
Kojima makes the player pull the trigger.
