the special is meh. not bad, not great.
if it had the bubble explosion special or ink jet...that would be game breaking
ETA: I don't really rack up kills with it, it's rare I get one. it forces a retreat but I never have another teammate capitalize on it. on the other hand, I've been killed by it a lot.

by making you back out of the lobby it basically limits the weapon choices. because generally speaking I wouldn't use a host of weapons but I find myself in some matches where I would use them to adjust to what the other players are doing
Agree and disagree. I think this is ok, and part of the strategy, ALTHOUGH, you should be able to change weapons on the player/pre-game screen because there are times when I face a tough team and I really need to switch for the next map. Because you know, when I get on a good team, Nintendo shuffles teams on the next map. When I'm on a bad team, I stay on that team until I leave.
I digress...
In a typical arena/Multiplayer FPS, the point is to kill, typically, no matter the stage of the game (even in CTF or other modes, killing is still the primary goal). Keeping people off of the map is important, spawn times can be incredibly long 1 minute+ or permanent. Splatoon unfolds almost as stages or phases of the map, the goal isn't always to kill (except maybe in the late game), the goal is to spread paint. For Turf War at least.
Early in the game, it's mostly about painting the base and expanding as far as possible. Mid-game is about covering the other team primarily/killing secondarily, and late game hold and kill. There's kind of a dance that is played.
If you could change weapons in the lobby, the strategy would go from what weapon to pick to be a part of a team to handle all phases, to "Rollers in the early game, dualies in the mid game, rifles/snipers in the late game," or some variation of that. I'm not sure that would be fun, every team would go 4 rollers for every early phase, there is no other choice.

you misunderstand me I think. what I mean is between games but without leaving the group you're with. it is annoying when someone is just wrecking you or a strategy is foolproof against your team. the adjustment I want to make for the next match may be a sniper rifle or a gatling gun, or .52 gal, etc. less coverage but fricks their strategy and my teammates can ink up the joint. What does ink coverage matter if you can't break their line which sometimes moves forward into your territory
but when I back out and change guns, i'm playing with a whole different group and that specific weapon i'm carrying now leaves me a lamb to slaughter. so no matter what, I keep the aerospray, roller or dualies and if I find myself ill equipped in a group I have to quit and find another group...instead of adjusting, then having them adjust and so forth.
a team or specific player's strategy may make a unique weapon otherwise not very useful...very useful.

Yeah we're on the same page I misunderstood.
I hear a lot say you should be able to Switch in game, per some games, I don't agree on Splatoon.

I know why you can't. keeps the pace of the fun going, but maybe just the ability to switch weapons. if you don't switch before the lobby fills, then it starts...no biggie
True but it seems like to me when you continue after a match on the screen where you are waiting for players to join, you could set a 30-45 second limit to be able to change weapons.

For me allowing weapon changes between games would make useless weapons occasionally devastating in terms of effectiveness...meaning we'd get more use out of the weapons. when I level up I can buy this cool new gun...that's only useful for certain situations. But the situation is no longer present if I change to that weapon
Leveling up is less meaningful, all these cool weapons are less exciting, etc.
It's the biggest flaw in the game and exacerbates the negative impact of (functionally speaking) not having voice chat
if I had to choose I'd prefer being able to switch weapons between games over voice chat

Yeah, sometimes the wait is longer anyway while waiting for it to fill up. So you wait and are ready to go but hold on for another 35 seconds
maybe only have that 35-40 seconds if the lobby filled up in less time than that.
Not complaining I'm just saying it's my one criticism. I like this even better than Mario kart

I have a basic SOP procedure in mind for pretty much every map
I always go left. Always. And I push it until I die. Then I cover whatever parts of the base people forgot and move on to team work with someone

ripped off 12 straight wins with loads of kills and points
Dualie squelchers are amazing. I controlled the middle ground in every map
Tomorrow I'll find out I was playing scrubs and get smoked

I've won the last 20 games I've played, pure Aerospray, and team leader every time.
Some of them have been close and I went HAM in the last minute.
Very fun game

I'll finish top scoring with aerospray but won't rack up kills
I can't hold a specific piec of turf with it and I get paired with shite players
With the dualie squelchers i get less points (700-900 rather than 900-1200) but I can hold down a big area through the course of the game and if I lose it I can take it back much easier

PSA - you have to manually redeem your Salmon Run prizes before it shuts down each day. There's a window to the left of the GrizzCo storefront where you ask for a bonus.

It stays open at least 2 hours after it closes, I've redeemed them before the next map update after it closes

Do you really have to have 10 of one ability card to slap them on gear?
I've been scrubbing that splatfest t for the past 3 nights and got over 10 abilities but max 3 of one type, this will take forever

Yes, but think about how powerful that ability is... I'm glad they put it become a big requirement like that.
You also get ability points from Salmon Run

I'm replaying and finishing single player so I can get the hero dualies
Already most of the way on rifle so I'll do that later.

So late last night I decided to try out this "aerospray" everyone constantly talks about:
How the frick are these not nerfed yet?!

well it covers territory really quickly. My problem with it is I in a 1 on 1 I get smoked by dualies.
I can cover ground, recover and recover, but I can't consistently hold down territory with it. ideally I want at least 2 with the aerospray maybe 3. Some of the really good players that can rack up 7-10 kills in a match with the aerospray...impossible to stop.
there's a strong correlation between splat gaps and wins. There's also diminishing returns on the aerospray. if you find yourself in 1400, 1500 territory either you're one of the best players in the world or your team sucks.

Do you like racers or FPS's more?
For me, it would be Splatoon by a long shot, but it's probably my favorite game ever (I don't game a lot). Of course, I'm not a huge racer fan (even though I've certainly enjoyed all the MK games).
Of course, calling Splatoon an FPS is sort of a misnomer. It's much stranger and more awesome than the typical FPS, in my opinion.
