Horror.
I don’t mind horror elements. Bioshock is one of my all time favorite games, and I’ll still go to Ravenholm every once in a while, but a true horror game? frick that noise. I have no interest in having my primal fight or flight reaction trigger over and over again for hours on end.

Any Battle Royale game. I'm so ready for that fad to die.

A game's story is a vehicle for the gameplay, which ultimately trumps everything. Obviously having a good story enhances the gameplay which is great.
You're partially correct. But a game's story can also be viewed as a form of progression. Getting that next development in the characters, that next cutscene, that next step forward in the story can also serve as the carrot by which the player is engaged in that gameplay. When a game can really envelope the player into feeling like he/she is actually a part of that story progression, it's fantastic.
That's what drew me to series like Metal Gear and Yakuza.

But caring about the story first and foremost sort of defeats the purpose of it being a game.
Not really. Again, I want a carrot to continue playing. A game like Destiny is one I have never nor will ever play. It's as interesting as paint drying. No reason for me to keep playing if it's only about stale gameplay. Repetitive gameplay has never been my thing, regardless of how great that gameplay may be. MGSV has the best gameplay of any Metal Gear game, but I think it's the worst game of the series. There's a reason the game has caused such a division among MG fans. Grindy as frick with weak characters and an unfulfilling narrative. Pass. To each their own...

Besides, even the best video game stories are still rather silly.
I agree, but I've found stories in video games--even with all the camp they seem to inject--tend to put an interesting spin on the same types of stories found in other mediums.
I think TLOU is a perfect example.
quote:
The story exists to showcase the gameplay, not the other way around.
I tend to believe that storytelling and gameplay can accentuate and compliment one another. Those games that pull it off are well received.
Case in point: God of War had a rather small cult following until the latest game came out and really put an emphasis on the characters. The new GOW has a far higher critic/gamer rating than any other in the series.

Mindlessly mashing buttons to get to the next cut scene is just a DVD that pauses itself a lot.
You just described nearly every FPS, sports title, and platformer out there. Hey, no doubting that there is a huge market for mashing buttons. Fortnight anyone? Nothing wrong with that. What's the ultimate payoff in Fortnight? Is there one? For some, they don't care and that's perfectly alright. But equating "mindlessly pressing buttons" exclusively to story-driven games makes no sense.
Some people are wrapped up in progression systems (which is why we see RPG-type progression systems even in the most simplistic action games). That's their carrot and why they keep playing. I want more. What happens to Joel? Will Lee survive? How will Kiryu overcome his obstacles? WTF is going on in Sons of Liberty?

What I dislike is when it's clear the story is the primary focus of the game and the gameplay is an afterthought or even interfered with by the story.
Yeah, I mentioned that I don't like Walking Simulators which is what it seems you've been addressing. I played two of them: TellTale's TWD and Firewatch. Both of those sucked.
God of War, Horizon, TLOU, Metal Gear, Yakuza...those all did a great job of balancing gameplay and story-telling IMO and those types of games are ones I support & like.

Just kind of lame.

When I say mindlessly mashing buttons, I'm more referring to games that are so easy to play you don't have to concentrate on what you're doing. All gaming is just button mashing but not all button mashing is mindless.
I enjoy first and foremost challenge in my gaming. I like feeling my progress through the game is earned, not guaranteed. Getting to the next level or boss or area and then actually having to overcome it with skillful gameplay is what I like most of all.
A game you can't lose is not a real game IMO. Winning means nothing if winning is guaranteed.
That's why things like those walking simulators aren't even really games. They're more like interactive stories.

I was with you until this point.
People who want to define what "real" games or "real" gamers are based on their personal preferences are intolerable.

What game do you mindlessly mash buttons?

Only games I've never given a chance was the turn based types.. I am about to retire from the FPS.. I used to play Halo all the time. I could hold my own.. Now I suck and get trashed talked by kids. My reflexes have slowed down I guess.. You gotta know when to fold them..

I don't think there's any that I would refuse to play, but I'm not crazy about turn based fighters and first person shooters.
