Bringing kids to the course

Today, I brought my 5 year old daughter out to the course for the first time. I have fond memories of my dad doing the same with me at that age.
I would tee off, let her tee off and chase her ball and hit it a few times. We would pick it up, and she could start playing again when we got to the green. She drained a 12’ putt and went ballistic. They could here her screaming 5 fairways over.
I got to teach her some etiquette after that, and we had a blast. The cheeseburgers never tasted so good after a round.

That's awesome. My fiance rode with me for a round this past weekend and I saw a guy with his 5-6 year old with his own pushcart/clubs and were doing about the same as you and your daughter. As soon as I opened my mouth, Ms. Gravy said "yes we are going to have that for our kids"

Played in a parent/child scramble at CCL with my then 6 year old daughter. She had just gone to golf camp and wanted to try and play. She only liked hitting the "big dog" and could actually hit it pretty well. She made about a 15 footer from the fringe for a birdie for us and it was the best moment I have ever had on a golf course. It made it better that my dad was following in a cart. I have very vivid memories of going out with him for 9 holes at Shenandoah about 25 years ago. I have two daughters and a son and my hope is that one of them takes a real interest in golf so I can pass along some of those memories I made with my dad as a kid!

Starting to see more and more kids at my course. Travel baseball and soccer is far more expensive than a family golf plan.

Saw a dad and his son walking at Santa Maria on Sunday. The kid was probably 5 or 6. Dad was carrying 2 bags. I don't think his memory will be as fond.

Playing before the corona hit. I brought my wife and ended up playing with a random solo who brought his 4 year old daughter. He had her a pallet in the back bin with some dolls and stuff. He would let her putt on each green and she was having a blast.
Since then, we've had a little girl and I look forward to getting her out on the course. Hopefully she'll enjoy the sport.... would love to have a drive from those red tees.

My first thought wasn't necessarily my kids, but was playing with my dad. Our childhood memories at Shenandoah 25 years ago were great. Playing 7-8-9 on Sunday afternoons before, after or during my dad's round, father son tournaments, etc. Really a great time to be a kid.
My daughter loves golf on Sunday afternoon. Head out after nap time around 4 and can easily get in 9 holes. She just putts right now and loves it. Even got her hitting a couple putts on my mat in the living room. My son is a little too young, but my hope is that he loves the game and can join me out there. Considering the cost of travel baseball, I could join BRCC or CCL for that price and everyone in the family can enjoy it. At least that's how I'm trying to sell the wife on it.
Only caveat is I have to blast Disney music the whole time. We actually played with my dad for Father's day, just us 3, and it was a wonderful experience, save for watching my dad tense up as my daughter asked him if it was OK to play Disney songs on the course. Music on the course isn't his thing, but he obviously allowed it.

I made it 6 holes today before my girl asked me for that. I got some odd looks at the turn, but didn’t care one bit. We switched it back around 12 tee box. No shame here hopefully she remembers that when she’s on the LPGA This post was edited on 3/31/20 at 3:14 pm

I am pretty lucky and fortunate enough to live on a course and have a golf cart, so my daughter has grown up with golf all around. She has loved taking rides, going to the driving range with me or just going down and putting on the green behind my house. She has always asked a ton of questions and she knows golf etiquette better than most of the guys in my regular group.
When she was 8 years old we started playing in a parent/child scramble every other Friday night. The course had age appropriate tees per the USJGA guidelines. On one Friday we had a candy bar bet against another father/daughter team and we were down one shot going into the par 3 last hole. The other Dad hit one to about 6 feet and I told my daughter that the only chance we had to win was to knock one in the hole . . . and damned if she didn’t do it for a hole-in-one! Myself, the other Dad, and a few parents that saw it from the clubhouse went nuts and my daughter was wondering what’s the big deal?
For full disclosure, her age appropriate tees were only 67 yards, but she recorded her first hole-in-one before I did and I’d been playing for about 25 years at that time. Her skill level was such that she might whiff the ball a couple times before making contact, but on that hole, she made contact on the first swing so it was legit. After that round, the summer was over, school started again and dance started again. Sadly, dance took over and she did not play again for several years. I do remind her that I have since passed her with 2 of my own, but I can’t get her to do more than occasionally join me on a trip to the driving range.

i brought my 5 year old daughter and paired up with a guy and his 7-8 year old son. i brought her ipad and thought she would watch it most of the time. Instead, she wanted to tee off and putt the whole time. never complained at all through 18 holes. After that, my 6 year daughter is now wanting me to take her. awesome memories for sure.

I’ve played a few times with my 6 year old. Pretty proud of how well he’s hitting hit.
There’s a psycho neighborhood “lady’s only” Facebook group where they complain that our course is still open and bitch about parents bringing their kids there. Because how dare we expose them to the elements like grass and air.

Obviously. This woman doing most of the complaining is older. Kids are grown. Owns a travel agency so her life sucks and she’s looking to feel like she has control over something. She tried calling WAFB and WBRZ.

I want to say that this thread is great (besides the one guy). I've gotten a little in my feels around having a family lately and seeing kids absolutely enjoy the things I am into gives me hope.
Congrats to all of you who bring your kids to do things like this. I have very fond memories of when I was younger and being exposed to golf and other interesting hobbies. It's amazing what sports can do for kids.

Coach I pray you and your family survive this mess. I aplaude you teaching your child the game of Golf. I spent many years supporting Jr. Golf through my foundation, no one is more supportive of the game for kids.
My last comment on this subject is...the chances of anyone contracting this virus playing golf may be non existant, but why take the chance with something so deadly.

My son started at 5 and did pretty much the same thing as what you are doing.
Many years later we enjoy the rounds we play.
One of the best times we had was playing in the Father/Son classic in Myrtle Beach. Now I think it's called Family golf week. I would recommend doing it once your child is old enough.
