Courses being miss rated impacting handicap?

According to USGA handicap system I am a 6.8 handicap, but I feel like that is too low for me. I average 11 strokes over par and am equally as likely to shoot 90 as I am 78. Whenever I play in handicapped tournaments it seems like the guys in my flights (usually 5-10 handicap) are mostly better than me. I think I’m probably more of a 8-10 cap but that’s not what the USGA thinks.
I’m trying to figure out why and I am wondering if a lot of local courses aren’t miss rated and miss sloped. Like they got rated decades ago and just kept that rating years later while technology and other factors have made the course easier.
For example I played like shite today, on a par 70 course, managed 84 since really not a ton of obstacles out there, tougher course could’ve easily been 90’s. The tips are rated at 71.8 and the slope is 129, I just can’t believe that’s correct, a scratch golfer on that course would shoot 70 or lower average IMO.
Anyway, I guess there’s nothing to be done about that it’s just annoying, maybe I should just intentionally shoot a few rounds in the upper 90s to boost my handicap

The game of golf, I found, is two games. The handicap game then the actual game.
I cannot stand it.

You sound exactly like a 6.8 handicap.

Yep my avg score at a 5.4 was 80.....remember that the handi only takes the average of your best 8 scores out of the last 20

So I’ve got to start fudging my scores, got it

Get ready for a “soft cap.” If you go up 3 shots, then any future adjustments up are “capped” at 50%. If you go up 5 shots, “hard cap” is in place with no adjustments for a year.
This was done to prevent hardcore “sandbagging.”

Your handicap simply measures your potential, a scratch player can just as easily shoot an 80 and it won’t change their cap

Courses can definitely be misrated or you don't match up to them.
As for the misrated courses, I think UClub is harder than the card suggests.
Some courses that are "easy" may be hard for you because of how the greens putt or the angles don't fit your eye. Some courses are really tight and hard, so they are rated as difficult. But if you can find the fairway, they are easy. The Bluffs in its prime was rated fairly hard, but if you can get off the tee, it isn't that bad.

I'm also a 6.8 handicap. 2021 scoring average is 83.2, with a range of 76-91.
Either they are cheating on their handicaps or they are just playing better at that point in time.
Handicap is based on the best 8 scores of your last 20 rounds. So the 90s are throwaway rounds.

I refuse to play off a handicap. Straight up man to man is the only way to really compete in anything

Yeah, that makes sense when you are a top tier amateur golfer, but I appreciate what the system is trying to do. I'm a 13 and have a friend that's a 25 and another that's a +3. Our rounds can get pretty boring if our options are let the great golfer bash our brains in or keep our own score and have nothing on the line.

I get it when gambling I guess but if you “beat” someone due to getting strokes you should have zero bragging rights IMO. I’ve heard people giving shite to others about beating them in the clubhouse only to find out the guy was playing off 8 strokes or something like that.

I wouldn't look at it like I'm being rewarded for beating someone when I didn't. I look at it like the person that won played better for themselves that day than the others.

Yeah you seem to have missed that they changed a lot about the handicapping system in the last 4 years, but everyone is playing by the same rules. The changes really hurt the inconsistent golfer more than anything, which sounds like you are. If you enter any competitive handicap tourneys, they tend to use your 6 or 12 month low. That could be like a 5 from when you were on at the end of last summer, but playing like shite in the spring you could be trending a 12. That might be the problem you are running into in those tourneys.
Its a little janky, but we are all playing by the same rules, just depends on how honest you are with your scores....
