The last few times I've been able to get out with my core buddies, we played Left Right Hammer and it was a bunch of fun. The two most left tee shots pair up against the two most right. Then it's just normal hammer rules after that. Birdies pay double.
Hammer is great by itself, but the varying teams makes it fresh on every hole.

In Japan I always played 1, 2, 3, 4. Play regular honors order. 1st and 4th off the tee are a team. 2 and 3 are a team. Combine the scores to get a number. If your team has a 3 and a 5, your team score is 35. If the other 2 have 4’s, they have 44. Your 2 players get +9. The other 2 get -9.
If you make a birdie, the other team flips their numbers. For a par 5, a 4 and 5 is 45. If the other 2 make 5 and 7, their 57 becomes 75. +30 and -30.
At the end you total the points and then pay whatever was agreed per point.
Some of my regulars had their own versions. If you birdied 3 in a row, you went solo on the 3rd birdie, and the others added their 3 scores in reverse order. In the example above it would be 4 vs 755. They would be -751 each. The 4 would be +2253. Since they liked 1000 yen per point, ($10), the winner just won $22,530.

We play handicap adjusted in a group. $5 per person goes to the winner of the front, $5 to the back and $5 to the overall.
Side bets with teams or individuals go by skin. Trap bets on 9 and 18. . . kills me every time.
I enjoy trash bets. We do a dollar per person for greenies, sandies, skins and natural birdies. $5 for eagles and $25 for hole in ones. Closest I've ever been to hole in one was in a group that had 11 of us. Would have taken home $250. Ball was one of those you'd watch for a minute to see if it fell had it not been a par 3. Literally teetering over the edge. Walked away with a bird.
