We've been coming up to play Ridgeview lately. Any other recommendations in that area? We're trying to explore things outside of 15 minutes from Dallas.
Most everything when you get up north of the city is at least in decent shape. Coyote Ridge, Indian Hills (I think, Indian something), Texas Star out by the airport. Frisco Lakes is decent. The bridges is yard but it's a Fred Couples design and is a good course.
Closer to the city, Prairie lakes has 27 holes. I haven't been out there in a long time, but it usually stays in good shape. Like I mentioned thorntree and sherrill park.
I also really like Hawk Creek out in Fort worth.

I heard the Tribute is in terrible shape. AND they want a lot of money to play there.

I've been wanting to get on Coyote Ridge so I'll probably go check that out in the coming weeks

Indian Creek in Carrollton. They have 2 course there, the creeks and the lakes. The creeks course is very good - Don't waste your time with the lakes.
Pecan Hollow in Plano is very good.

I just moved to the area within the last year and have only played Steven’s Park once with a coworker. I was planning on trying to play either Monday or Wednesday next week as a solo. It looks pretty empty during the week in the afternoon, so I figured it wasn’t a big deal to get a last minute tee time.

I'm honestly stunned it would take anyone more than 4 hours to play a round of golf. And yes I'm sure it's because you were waiting on other groups in front of you. Just don't understand no matter how good or bad someone is that they can't play faster. I've played with bad golfers that play fast so just sucking at golf isn't an excuse.
Stevens is a short course and a ton of old guys play it. It’s impossible to get a round in there under 4 hours because of all the people. When you have 4somes going off every 8 minutes all day and half the groups are 60+ year old men it’s going to be slow.
To answer the OP, Texas Star is awesome, after that this list is all pretty similar IMO
Luna Vista
Stevens
Cedar Crest
Bear Creek
Sherril Park
I think Tenison Highlands is a little nice than those
Bottom of the list
Tenison Glens
Duck Creek
Dallas golf Club

Like I said before the only way you can get 18 in is walking up solo for the last tee time and pray nobody is in front of you and people start dropping out when it starts getting dark.
How does Highlands look right now? I haven't played it this year. I'll have to check out Sherril Park. Another one I liked in the cheaper range was Grand Oaks. It was in nice shape when I played it back in February (except the range).

I've played it numerous times not doing that. Just call and tell them you're a single a you can play any time. Most every time they're like if you can get here in 15 minutes we have a spot. And these were on the weekend.
This time a year it's probably a little harder, but once it gets hot shouldn't be that big of a problem.

It's ok, I played it a couple of weeks ago. It was fine, but there's multiple courses within 20 minutes I'd rather play.

It’s in good shape, not sure why there are people in this thread hating on it, it’s one of the nicer Muni’s in the city IMO, there’s a reason it’s more expensive than most of the others.
I play them all fairly regularly and fairly evenly. I find myself at Luna most often because it’s close to my house, but it’s far from my favorite, they also have the best practice set up.
I play Tenison Highlands and Glen often because they’re close to my work. Glen isn’t THAT bad if you’re looking for a cheap round, but it’s definitely not always in great shape.
Cedar Crest is a good one, sometimes they have questionable greens, but the Dallas am qualifier is played there so I play it a lot this time of year to prepare for that.
Stevens is good but short, which can be nice because it makes you hit different shots off the tee and play positionally a lot, no driving range btw
Both Sherril park courses are fine, I actually prefer #2 but most like #1.
One that hasn’t been mentioned that is okay and pretty cheap is Riverchase. It’s also a pretty easy course, especially if you struggle with a slice, several holes out there you can miss right by 100 yards off the tee and be fine.
In a pinch you can play Duck Creek, but it’s way overpriced IMO, there’s a reason you can almost always get a tee time there.
There are some others around that I just don’t play as much, Bear Creek, Indian Ridge, Golf Club of Dallas, Pecan Hollow.
A good course I should play more is Firewheel in Garland, really nice set up.
Any of you Dallas Muni guys ever want to play let me know. Now that it’s summer most of my work is in the early morning and the evening. I’ll have free time during the day most Tues/Thurs and will probably be playing golf.

Just curious which ones within 20 minutes of Tenison Highlands you think are better tracks? Not counting private courses

In the city, yes. In the metroplex there's 2 dozen courses +/-$25 that are better.
And I actually agree with you about Glen. It's like $12 to walk so I'll go out there in the afternoons every now and then

Withing twenty of Tenison really only Cedar Crest, but within 20 of downtown, Thorntree, Golf Club of Dallas, Sherrill Park, and Firewheel I'd rather play.
I just don't love the golf course at Tenison. It's fine, but there are just places I'd rather play.
Also, Keeton (Keaton) park is super cheap and flat so it's a good place to go walk in the afternoon as well.

I played Tenison Highlands a few times when I was living in Dallas. It's okay, but I just enjoyed Stevens and Cedar Crest more. Cedar Crest is a more enjoyable layout for less $$$ and when I was living there a 4 years ago, it was in really good shape. I think I paid $9 one time to walk 9 holes there. Just a great bargain for what you got.

Has anybody ever played Tangle Ridge or Buffalo Creek? Those are a little farther out so I have never made it out to either but it's in that $50-75 range that seems to be a sweet spot for above average tracks.

Tangle Ridge is worth the drive and $$. Played it a couple of times at the beginning of COVID and it was in great shape.

Think I've played it one time. Like you said, it's going to be similar to everything else in that price range. Worth at least playing once.

Cool I'll check them out if I'm bored and want to drive out there. Just booked a Waterchase tee time for Sunday morning

I might play too if we don't get anymore rain. I'm not interested in cpo

Any other recommendations?

Where are you staying and how far are you willing to go? How much do you want to spend? There's courses that were recommended that are almost 2 hours away from each other.
