Let’s talk about the Saudi Golf Super League

I don’t know how many of you have been following this, but a Saudi backed group is trying to start up its own league to compete directly with the PGA. They have reached out to the top 100 players on tour about joining their league. LINK Their appeal is by offering guaranteed contracts. For players like Bryson and Phil, that’s $100 million dollars plus. Players have signed NDAs already, but leaks are starting to come out about contract deals, and how it will compete with the PGA. What do you guys think about this? Will this change the game as we know it?

The news that they are shooting to have Bryson as the face of the league is strange. He is a pretty polarizing player. Some people love him, but seems like more people don't care for him at all. But maybe that was the only top player that would listen to them.

I think we’ve discussed this before. There were a few players approached about it. The PGA, USGA, and Augusta National made it clear they would be banned from Majors and any competitions if they joined this new tour.

If all the top guys got together and played in it though, like the biggest 25-30 names, almost no way do I see the PGA following through on that threat.

Our National Tours and Major Events need to be protected and I am OK with some penalties.
Sponsors, volunteers and the Tours pour a lot of money and time into putting together some great events.
Loyalty matters.

where do they plan on playing these events? even if they get a bunch of players I imagine that it will be tough for them to book tournaments at top courses that don't want to be associated with Saudi money.

Let’s see them call Augusta National’s bluff!
It’ll never happen. The top 25 players are gunning for Majors.

See I got 4 DV on my reply so far.
Still stand by it. Lots of folks invest a lot of their personal time in putting on our tournaments and they deserve good fields. The Tour couldn't make it without volunteers.
Then you have the charities that are helped tremendously by the tournaments. The better the field, the more money for the charities.
Tour Pro's are independent contractors and pay their own expenses.
But TV and attendance pays for the purses they play for.

Who cares, the game is too competitive for someone to go out there and smoke Jack’s record, Dechamdouche doesn’t need the $ but to offer him more than Tiger’s career earnings to join the tour and play it will definitely make him put some serious thought into it. I see a lot of players past their prime taking the $$$ and hauling arse, the PGA Tour doesn’t own anyone and $ talks in this day and age.

What I don’t understand is what the Saudi’s end game? There is zero chance that they make up all this money they want to give away. I get they have all the money to throw away but wtf. I’m a big gold fan but the saudis are treating these guys like gods lol. If I was them I would be throwing all this money into a new NFL/College league or something.

It's all about building reputation. With the numbers being thrown out, there's 0% chance they make a profit, ever. This is strictly to build goodwill and a name/industry outside of oil. Exposure to the modern world.

Have you watched a PGA tour event lately. All it is is one big commercial. They follow the last two groups and you don't really get to see much golf. Hell they probably show the Comcast Business top 10 more than they show golf.
Look at this week, they couldn't even get the top players to show up at Pebble.
I was on fence about a Super League for a while but the more I read about it and the more I think about it, it makes too much sense. It would be incredible to tune in 12-15 times a year knowing you are getting the top 40 players in the world every week. No offense to Tom Hoge and Keith Mtichell but they don't move the needle. I want to see the best competing against the best.
Would I love for the majors to be protected, of course! I don't think you can have a major without the top players in the world. Love the F1 idea where you have teams of 4.
There is so much more they could with golf to make it entertaining. They are stuck in this network tv, Thurs to Sunday rut and it is time for a fresh take.

The super league has no shot because Augusta won’t cave, and players won’t participate if they are banned from Augusta

If we have 25 of the top 50 players in this league you’ll see Augusta cave real quick you can count on that.
Also I bet Donald Trump would let them play on his courses, might be a perfect match.

You do understand that this has already played out. The players have already been approached. The conversations have already been had.

Seems to me Greg Norman has a hardon for the PGA (allegedly over them not letting Greg play non PGA events when he was on tour) so he’s got the Saudis backing his competitive league in an effort to challenge the PGA. The Saudis are backing it cause they like golf and can expand into the sport.
frick em. I give their league 3-5 years and it will be defunct. No one wants to watch golf over there and they can’t get enough venues in this country.
And if the top players go over, it opens up spots for lesser known players to become top players.
I hope the PGA tells the players who go to stick it and bar them from majors as well as pulling their cards. Send them back to the Kornferry

Yes but nothing has been announced yet

The PGA controls 1 major. I think it could be interesting to watch and I’m sure courses would embrace it.
