Need to round out my new set. Primarily the woods.

Just picked up a used set in pieces. Taylor made burner irons and driver. I have a gap wedge and a sand wedge but they’re each their own brand. That leaves me still needing to fill out my woods. Based on my research I think I’d need something to serve as a rescue club but unsure how to sort of figure out what would serve as that club. And not sure if I should go for hybrids or a more traditional 3 and 5 wood. My iron set starts at 3 if that makes a difference at all.

Everyone has a different setup these days, I’ve got 3i - PW. A 58* 54* and 50*. I’ve got one 4 wood (adjustable loft) and one hybrid. I suggest just going to the range and figuring out all your yardages and fill in the gaps you think need to be filled. Maybe a 3 or 4 hybrid then a wood that can have the loft adjusted whenever you want.

It all depends on what you hit well. Like me, I don’t carry a 3 wood. It’s driver, 5 wood, 4 hybrid. They have plenty of distance for what I need and I hit the 5 wood more consistently.
All that said, go to a store where you can hit them and go with what you hit the best and gives you the best range distance and accuracy wise.

You could probably get away with one long club and add another wedge. Sounds like you’re a beginner, so you’ll be really inconsistent from outside of 200 yards anyway. Split the difference and get something like a 4 wood (16/17*) loft. It’ll be easier to hit up in the air than a 3 wood and you can alway choke down or hit it 3/4 if you need a shorter shot.

Sounds like a couple of hybrids would serve you well.
I believe that most good players will tell you that the 3 wood is the hardest club to fit yourself to.
Today's lower spin fairway woods combined with the low spin of the balls make it tough.
If you are set on a wood, then a 5 wood and hybrid might be the way to go.
I carry a 4 & 7 wood with a #4 Hybrid. I still use an original Ping Eye2 lob wedge bent to 58 degrees. It is so versatile that I only carry a PW, GW and the Ping lob.

From your threads, and posts, it sounds like you are just beginning this great game. If I were in your position I'd start with a couple hybrids over the typical fairway woods. Why? Because the shafts on the hybrids are shorter than the fairway woods, giving better control. It will cost you a few yards in distance, but not enough to be significant Use the hybrids until your swing develops to the point you feel comfortable to try different fairway clubs. The hybrids I'd start with are the 5 and the 4, and maybe even consider a 3. Your choice. Oh, I'd also consider some lessons from a good local pro. They can be worth their weight in gold.

Alright that all sounds pretty good. Is there a difference between a hybrid and a rescue club?

A rescue club used to be a really wide flanged iron. Today they can be a wide flanged iron or a hybrid type head. Rescue clubs tend to have higher lofts than a 4 hybrid, usually over 23 degrees. But there is a fairly long history on what was called rescue clubs, and if you dig some you'll find they can be quite varied.

Pick either hybrids or woods based on which you hit the best. Taylormade makes a rescue which is really just a hybrid. Learn to hit a low stinger to eliminate needing a rescue club.
