I played a lot in high school and into college then tapered off once I moved to Colorado and got more into skiing and climbing. I am starting to play more and still have my Titleist 755's from when I was a much better golfer. I need something more forgiving and figure the tech has even further advanced from when those were released back in 2006 or so. I still strike the ball pretty well but the bottom line is it is not consistent enough to justify a low handicap iron.

What y'all got?

ETA - always liked the feel of Titleist and Ping irons. Played Ping Eye 2's for many years before switching to the 755's

Taylormade Stealth irons for the situation you just described.

Or New Level 623 CBs since you said you still retained some skill in striking.

New Level is the best value in all of golf.

Check out Ben Hogan irons custom made in Fort Worth, TX sold directly to consumer. Lower priced than most major brands and quality is top notch. I switched from Mizuno blades to their PTX Pro black irons earlier this year and happy with the clubs.

Callaway hard to beat for a forgiving iron.

Get fitted at a place like a club champion that has pretty much every club manufacturer. Srixon ZX5s, Titleist T200, Pings and Mizunos JPXs as well.

I just got fitted for some PXG's yesterday. They felt awesome and the price has come down a lot. I ended up going with the gen4 311T with the rifle type shaft. They should be here in a week and can't wait to play them. I did shoot a nice 73 today with my Ping Eye 2's

I was in a similar situation a couple of years ago. Used to play regularly, had a single digit handicap, played with Titleist AP2s for years. Quit playing for a few years and when I started again suffered through a few rounds before deciding I needed to get some clubs that better fit my game and age. Went to Edwin Watts with the idea that I'd get the latest Titleists, but got in the bay and hit a half dozen different irons. I had my own bias, but the guy helping me just told me 'i know you think you want the Titleists, but you're hitting the Callaway Apex DCB 15 yards farther on average'. So I bought those and have been playing with them for a year and a half. Game is rounding into shape and I'm happy with them.

TLDR: go get fitted and get something that fits you, objectively. It will save you time and aggravation.

Very little advancement in irons since the late 1980s when perimeter weighting was perfected.

Get your old club heads reshafted with a flex appropriate for your club head speed.

That's not even close to correct

Yes there have been advancements in multi metal iron heads but unless one is either a very high or very low handicap, which does not sound like the case here, the benefit will be negligible.

Physics is physics.

But Ping Callaway Titleist TaylorMade Srixon Cleveland want to sell you a new set of clubsevery two years, and apparently, you are buying.

Play well, enjoy the greatest game ever

Don't fall into this trap. I was at 2nd Swing in Minneapolis months ago and was hitting a bunch of different Mizuno clubs, JPX 850, JPX Hot Metal, even the old MP-32 for fun. I got the same line when hitting the Hot Metal. Well yeah, duh, because of all the 7i I am hitting the Hot Metal may have a 7 stamped on it but the jacked lofts make it a 6i.

When it comes to irons be more concerned with consistent striking, consistent distance, spin, height, and shot shaping. It's not all about distance.

End of story, I bought the JPX 850s and love them.

Yep, I get that the club lofts aren't the same, but the new clubs are a lot easier to hit, more forgiving and generally enjoyable to play.

GOAT iron?

I like the idea of getting fitted. Back in the day I was turned off by the super thick profile of the Callaway irons, but this was years ago.

The p790s look great on paper. Tried a buddy's Titleist T300's at the range over the weekend and was impressed.

Thank you for all the suggestions

This.

I have Mizuno 921 Hot Metal Pros. I really like them, but they are almost comically long at times. I've hit (on occasion) 215/220 yard 6 irons and my swing speed is above-average... it's silly what clubs can do now in terms of distance with the new lofts and characteristics.

That's not to say the Hot Metals aren't great all-around clubs, they feel really good and I like the smaller head and less offset than a typical distance/GI iron. That's why the work for me, even though one of their defining traits is distance.

But if I were to get fitted next time, distance would not be my #1 factor when choosing a set. For me it would be consistency, forgiveness, and looks. Obviously some players crave more distance, but to each his/her own.

Distance is a byproduct of your launch conditions. If your spin and angle of decent are correct, longer is always better. I don't know why this is so hard to understand. Manufacturers have come an impressively long way with being able to "juice" these irons. If you hit your 6 iron with the same spin, but higher and longer why would you bitch about it?

Get fit. The brand name has little to do with it. Every company makes 3 or 4 models which fit the good player (less offset) to the high handicap ( thicker top line and more offset)
