If it's in the tournament rules to have previous champions play for x amount of time, you take advantage of it as long as you can.

I'll just say I've never played with you so you might be a gamer, but people way underestimate how good tour pros (even washed up old bangers) are than even scratch guys

It's not even the same conversation

I feel like I'm pretty aware how good those guys are. What I'm really saying is how bad Ben is comparatively to everyone else. He finished last in a Champions Tour event last year by 16 strokes. He struggles to drive the ball more than 250 yards now. Chain smoking has really done him in.

Don't get me wrong, super nice guy, and he's had an incredible career. But his game has just kind of fallen off.

How many players this week only made it in due to champion status exemption?

Hell there caddies could probably kick my arse, I was just trying to make a point. I imagine there are some pretty good European players that didn't get a invite because of the past champs taking a spot.

Off the top of my head:

Daly, Duval, Hamilton, O'Meara, Lyle, Clarke, Cink, and maybe Els and Harrington.

ETA: Just looked and I missed Lawrie and Lehman.

Cink and Harrington also get in on the Open Champions in the last 10 years rule.

Definitely agree with this, but that just means you have to play better. I think it's a cool reward for the champions that they get to play in the tournament for a while. The age used to be 65 I think but they went down to 60 at the Open. I don't mind this one at all because older players can do very well at the Open venues as short as some of those courses are.

US Open is just 10 years so I think that one is more than ok.

PGA could probably adjust theirs.

So 11? I wouldn't count last 10 years champions players.
I'd love to see how many made the cut or were even close.

A champ can point for a major and be relatively fit for a few rounds.
