Phil is at the age where he doesn’t need the pga tour. If I were in his shoes I’d take the LIV money and run.
That’s his advantage over most touring professionals

I don’t know how much truth there is to it but the golf channel guy said someone estimated that Phil could make $20 mil a year for the next 10-15 years just for being Phil. But that might not be the case if he turns into a villain that destroyed the PGA.
I think Phil cares more about the upfront cash

Cool. Get the frick out.

He probably will. I don’t blame him.

Other players may not be backing Phil because they don't like him, or they see him being buried and don't want the same to happen to them. Phil is a warning to not cross the picket line.

I don’t understand why Golf Channel et. al. give a shite either.

Probably more true than we know.

Supposedly there is quotes from Tom Lehman that when him and Phil were partners during the Presidents cup, Phil was betting and checking football lines on his phone during the round and completely out of it golf wise
If that’s true Phil is a true degenerate gambler and may have actual real cash flow issues
They also won that match 5&4, in alternate shot format. He couldn't have been that checked out.

quote:Incorrect. It was four ball, and Phil went 8 straight holes where he was out of it and Lehman had low ball

They ended up winning 2 and 1
As far as how he was gambling I don’t know. Ask Lehman
quote:
"Phil is hitting it everywhere — he's barely finished a hole through the first eight holes. He keeps saying, 'Don't worry, I’ll show up eventually.' "On the ninth hole he buries it in the front bunker and is out of the hole again. He walks way back into the trees and is sitting on a stump with his back to everybody and his head down. "I think he's giving himself a pep talk, so I go over there to try to make him feel better and he's got his phone out and he's checking the football scores."
From another playing partner around that time
quote:
Steve Flesch, who was paired with Mickelson on a Sunday during the Hyundai Team Matches, told Shipnuck that every hole Mickelson "was checking like a beeper or something." "He could not have cared any less about what we were doing on the golf course. He was definitely more concerned about who was winning the football games and who was covering the spread."

My point about access to his bookie also still stands. How was he checking lines and placing bets on a phone that doesn't connect to the internet? Literally placing phone calls?

Wrong. They won 5&4 in alternate shot on day 1. Won 2&1 best ball on day 3.

You're ignoring the main point.

So Lehman and Flesh are just in on it to pick on poor ole Phil
They both have almost the same story about Phil gambling while being his partner. Phil be done witch-hunted

Yeah. Impossible that they were just making assumptions because they didn't like him and he has a reputation for it. Also convenient they waited more than two decades to say anything.
Look, Phil is a massive douchebag. But it seems highly unlikely he was checking scores and betting lines in real time on the golf course, given the technology at the time. Also unlikely no other more recent and similar allegations have come out, given how ridiculously easy it would be to place a bet from the course nowadays.
It also shouldn't be hard for the author to verify said sketchy behavior, rather than relying on the 20-year-old memories of a couple old men, given that there were probably cameras following his every move.

Why don’t they go after the WGC for holding events in China? China isn’t a whole lot better than Saudi when it comes to “human rights”.

What really pisses me off about the segment that golf Channel ran was that they were acting like he is a fallen hero that they loved. It was a bunch of back handed bullshite. It was clearly meant to intimidate anyone who dares to cross the PGA. I've been back on forth on this issue of LIV, but now, I am on Phil's side.
frick the PGA and Golf Channel! I hope the Prince of Saudi Arabia gives Tiger a BILLION Dollars to come play.
