Definitely below all majors and TPC. Is it the next on the list? I’d say WGC events would be above it and tournaments like Memorial and Arnold Palmer as well. It just doesn’t move the needle much. Even with fans, like at Rio. Thoughts?

In the golf world the Olympics rate very low.
In the entire real world they rate very high. Depends on where you are

In addition to the tournaments you mentioned, the Ryder & President's Cup are definitely ranked above the Olympics.

The tournament ranks low, but having an Olympic medal is bad arse. It’s all or nothing for these guys.
Remember this is a pay check for them. The olympics doesn’t pay

I think it somewhat depends on the individual player as to where it stacks up. For guys like Sungjae Im and Si Woo Kim, it's a huge deal because a medal exempts them from mandatory military service for S. Korea. I would think winning a gold medal in Japan would be massive for Hideki.

In terms of just a pure event from a strength of field perspective, it's a very weak field and definitely below WGCs. However, it is kind of like comparing apples to oranges given the weird format of the event.

Chappy is right though that an Olympic medal is pretty badass. I think it will always probably be mentioned in the first few lines of a guy's career bio.

It’s not a field that includes all of the top 100.

It’s a novelty.

Olympics should have picked long drive as golf event.

I agree. Say what you want about majors and all, but having an Olympic gold medal would be something pretty fricking cool.

And it’s not like track or swimming with 100 events… only 1 guy gets a gold medal every 4 years

I think it would rate higher if it was played as a team event.

Get the best 16 countries in a seeded bracket based on OWGR rankings. Five players per country.

Play 5 match play singles matches against the same country. 40 total matches on day 1 in round of 16. Whichever country wins 3 of the 5 matches moves on to next round.

Could be played in four days. Gold/Silver and Bronze/4th matches on day 4.

Possible list of countries (I didn't calculate the actual top 16 as of today and list is not necessarily in ranking order)

USA
Great Britain
Australia
South Africa
Ireland
Japan
Spain
South Korea
Canada
Sweden
Norway
Mexico
India
France
Germany
Italy

It’s been pretty boring so far. But this last round should be fun.
-The course doesn’t favor any certain style of player
- The course is gettable. There’s been at least one 63 shot every day
- Everybody in the field should be going for every shot
-This will all come down to pressure and whoever has the stones will win

Below nearly every regular tour event or any national open or American or British AM (which gets you a Masters invite)

Both of the most recent iterations have been screwed by plagues too… Zika in 2016 and now COVID. I think there was quite a bit of excitement in 2016 before Zika became a real concern for guys who still planned to have kids.

I think it’ll grow in stature. Hopefully Paris 2024 goes off without a hitch. The telecast time will be similar to a British Open as well, so it should be a good watch.

I agree on a team component/format as well.

I’ve changed my mind.

It’s not a major, but it is special.

Xander will make major endorsement money and golf got a worldwide audience.

I’d put it after the majors, fedex cup winner, and The Players.

It’s a great win.
