In early July I was put on a PPI for some acid issues and started taking 40 mg daily. Over the past month I've had a sore throat and thrush and recently had strep. From what I read PPI's can mess with your good bacteria and lead to some of these issues. I stopped taking the meds earlier this week.

Anyone ever get side effects from taking a daily PPI?

I know heart burn medicine lowers your B12. Take sublingual B12 everyday if you can. I was sluggish for awhile even though I worked out. I’m 52, had a hormone panel run and my testosterone was as good as a mid 30s male. My B12 was basically in the gutter. Not sure about your issues with strep and stuff

Wife had some gut issues last year or 2, IBS related. Had gastritis on endoscopy. Her regimen was omeprazole, IBGard, and VSL #3. The VSL #3 is a probiotic powder that you mix and drink. Available on Amazon, but that concentration is less than the prescribed one. I think Amazon in 450billion cfu, whereas the Rx was 900 billion. Worked great for her. Consider giving that a try.

May wanna look into some probiotics to replenish some of that gut bacteria that the PPI has killed off

For reflux issues, I take Pepcid completes ( once a day as needed chewable.. they have Pepcid and tums in them)

I took Prilosec for a few months and started to have side effects like you and hated it .

Yeah I bought some probiotics and Greek yogurt to try and replenish the gut health. From what I read the PPI can really mess with the bacteria in your gut and it can lead to other issues.

I started an all muscle meat carnivore diet and it cured my reflux nicely.

If you can tolerate good fiber like beans, oatmeal or apples, eat some of those to help restore your flora. Probiotics are mostly killed by stomach acid.

Yeah I like all of those foods for sure. It's funny, about a year ago I made a conscious effort to greatly reduce the processed food I was eating and then this summer I was having the acid issues. Gut health dictates so many other things, I've been trying to get it right! I'm 41, but I noticed when I hit 40 things started to change, getting older can be rough!

PPI can do that.

I take Nexium 20 every morning. I have never had any issues.

If you want to try something different, try an H2 blocker like Famotidine or Ranitidine. These don't have the same side effects as PPIs.

Do this.

Skip this.

Bet you won't even need PPI after being on carnivore for a few weeks.

A general question, as I’ve only had heartburn twice in my entire life up until my current struggles.

I took Pepcid for 14 days, and stopped last week as nothing seemed to be changing. Three days later, I’m getting “the taste” and have to go throw up in the sink 2-3 times today. About all I can keep down is a cheese stick per day. I’ve restarted the Prilosec and will do 90 days this time.

What else could I be doing to exacerbate this? I’ve barely eaten anything the past four or five days, and when I do, I keep a bag next to the couch in case I can’t make it to the sink.

ETA: the weight loss is awesome, 7 pounds in three days. But I have to start working in the office next week, and for sure won’t be able to get out of earshot of everyone else before ralphing.

Have you seen a Gastro Dr? If not, you need to get scoped.

I was scheduled for a scope, but my ride went on a fishing trip or something. I’ve been trying to gut it out since. For the last few months, it was twice a month, but coming off of the medication poured rocket fuel on it.

Only reason I ask is because it was about 20 years ago when it got that bad for me. I got scoped and had ulcers. I've been on PPI ever since and haven't had any issues.

I'm thinking long and hard about starting Carnivore to see of I can rid myself of the issue and get off the PPI.
