I quit drinking a few months ago and picked up cycling as a new hobby. The first few weeks I missed the booze and bar scene, but that passes quickly. I ride my bike 6 days per week and lift after work now, and after that I have no desire to get drunk. Stick with it for a full month and decide if it was worth it. I've gone down from 210 to 180, have a ton more energy, feel much more effective at my job and in personal relationships, and save money. Im eating a clean diet now too and it's pretty awesome to eat good food till I'm stuffed and still drop weight every week. For me it was a no brainer to keep it going even though my original bet to myself was only a month

That's awesome. I started out the same way with the cycling and eating. Good luck.

leaving on a three week road trip in two weeks, when i return, i think i'm going to buy a bike. my dog would love to get more time running, and it will keep me out of the house and my mind off booze/cigs

How are you holding up man?

I had a pretty solid craving for booze yesterday while I was heading to a meeting and luckily the thought didn't materialize into an obsession and the start of a mental relapse.

That's good stuff. Treat yourself to a steak or something. It may seem small, but that's a huge win.

Stay with it, man. I'm on day 51 of quitting smoking. Working out daily now. My lungs are clearing up and I am feeling a lot better. It is worth it. Fight through this time.

day 51

I found that having a calender and putting an X on every day that I was sober was very satisfying and kind of turned into a daily goal. Those X's really started to mean something to me.

Can't remember if I've mentioned this before and didn't feel like reading through the other stuff. Hope this can help someone else.

i quit smoking cokd turkey multiple times between 16-26 for 6+ months at a time. from my experience every time i relapsed and went back i smoked more than i did before. if you have to go back switch to vapor.

its like switching from real sugar to splenda. awkward for a couple weeks but once you aquire the flavor its fine. best part is if you smoke flavor, even menthol, after a few weeks regukar ciga will taste like friggin tree bark and keep you from going back.

quitting smoking was actually pretty easy for me. I smoked heavily from ages 19-24. I thought it would be hard cause I'd go through them like nothing at a bar or even during a break at work while shooting the shite with whoever.

from what I remember the first few days were hard but then by the second week i had already gained a few pounds from eating more than usual. Food started to taste way better and my energy level at work was a lot higher.

it was tough hanging out at bars for awhile cause most of them are like giant ash trays to me

currently not drinking any liquor. Its been since June 28th since I've had any. Last year I didn't have any from June-November (caved on Thanksgiving).

don't really drink too much beer anymore but occasionally I'll overdue it.

when i start back up with the liquor, I'll probably drink even less beer. That's how it went last year.

While not drinking any liquor: Fair amount of beer.
While drinking liquor: Not much beer at all.

one of these days I imagine I'll put it all together.

Good luck.

Also, you've identified that you slipped. That's also significant. The easy thing would be to say "oh well, I slipped, might as well keep going".

Identifying and admitting to your mistake is the first step. You took the second positive test when you addresses the mistake. I say good job and keep it up.

Today is my day 1 of no booze. Never could grasp the social drinking thing...I've always been all or nothing. The anxiety the next day is what I can't handle.

i realized after my first week that its the cigs that are really tough for me. i'm with you on the drinking, when i drank, i drank. there's no concept of a beer or two. its a twelve pack, or a case, or a pint of whiskey, or whatever. if i'm drinking i'm drinking.

the anxiety isn't getting to me...the desire to smoke a cigarette is. that's the biggest reason i caved and drank, because i refused to smok without drinking. and why i threw out everything i had left in my house the morning after relapsing.

I've done this so many times, I don't even want to start counting. I've done it sober, I've done it drunk AF, and hungover (gagging as I did it). This last time I threw all the booze out of the fridge it was 4 magnum bottles of Pinot and about 2 cases of beer (the beer pouring out took awhile because I could barely stand up because I hadn't eaten in 3 1/2 days). I went to the store the day before so I didn't have to go for a day or two as the shame and self guilt of buying all that booze at 7am is pretty demoralizing. But I always said to the clerk "It's going to be a heck of party tonight, lots of folks coming over!" Lulz

Or the 5am beer buying was always 'fishing trips', all of which never took place. I drank alone and preferred it that way as I didn't have to worry about pissing anyone off (especially if I didn't look at my phone). Of course I was pissing family off because I wouldn't respond to texts or calls for days on my benders. Always hated the random knocks on the doors from them to see if I was still alive. I say all of this at the ripe old age of 30 and to tell you that this disease is progressive as frick. Like the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous says "it always gets worse, never better" and "in some instances there has been brief recovery, followed always by a still worse relapse".

Have you said why you want to stop drinking? Just want to be healthy or is it affecting your life, your relationships, your job, ect?

Yep. One is too many and a thousand is never enough. I drank until I passed out basically every time I drank. I don't want to turn this into a personal drunkalog. If you have any questions or need some info, just ask away. I've been to 84 meetings in 34 days now. They recommend going to 90 in 90 days.

outside of my first semester at LSU i was never a big drinker, i started out of boredom about five years ago and its progressed to drinking every night. but i only smoke cigarettes if i'm drinking, so that's the real reason.

also booze just doesn't do anything for me any more. in retrospect, not sure it ever did.
