I was offered a quantity of mercury, about a pound. I know of a few interesting uses for it, but is there any value to this quantity? I might just get it and drop off at a hazmat recycling, just to get rid of it.

Its old, in a nifty little crock type bottle with MERCURY emblazoned into the glaze (with a cork stopper).

Read the Material Safety Data Sheet. Mercury is bad for every living thing (potent neurotoxin). The Baton Rouge hazardous household material collection program accepts it, check your locale to see if they do. Or, contact try a local university chemistry lab.

In the meantime, minimize contact with the container unless you're wearing chemical gloves.

Made a helluva toy when I was a kid. Had a bottle under the kitchen sink.

We used to play with it in grade school.

It would coat silver dimes and make them look pretty cool for a while.
