I have a Z375R John deere and it spits belts pretty regular. I always assumed it was due to the amount of sticks that end up on top the deck and getting in the belts but maybe it isnt

Regardless it was a ~$4500 mower and I love it. I take care of it but I work it like a piece of rental equipment and its holding up very well so far.

Im in the camp that buying commercial equipment for yard maintenance is silly. My FIL just bought whatever the most expensive john deere gas zero turn you can get is. Yea its a cool piece of equipment and all, but I can replace mine 3 times for what he paid for his.

If it's entirely for mowing and nothing else, a 54" Gravely or SCAG would do well. XMark is solid too. Usually they have Kawasaki or higher end Kohler motors and 3-5 gallon fuel tanks - you'll need lots of fuel for 6 acres.

If you don't have a lot of obstacles and sometimes need to use ground engaging equipment or to tow/move equipment around - John Deere X700 series or X500 series with a 54" deck would work well. The X700 series can be optioned with a Yanmar diesel and can support a rear mounted brush cutter although it's a little light for that. You can get hydraulics with the higher end X500 series like the X580 or X590, but it's only going to have a Kawasaki gas motor.

If you need to actually use things like a back-hoe or have some real improvements that need to be done to the land, maybe a SCUT with a 25ish horsepower diesel. But these can be heavy and a pain to haul around. It's ideal if the land is not really improved - and you can attach a rear mounted brush cutter to most of these pretty easily. Most of them have front lifts standard.

Six damn acres and I’m getting a small tractor. We had about 4 acres that we mowed when I was a kid. It took forever on a rider. Ruined the weekend. Went to a quality mower on a tractor and made it much more bearable.

Honestly this is where I'd look depending on the land. A used compact tractor with a rear mounted blade to minimize the frequency of service would be where I'd look. 6 acres is a lot to do it weekly or even bi-monthly.

It really depends on the condition of the land. If it's already mostly cleared but not really graded and the intent is to maintain like a lawn or small pasture....maybe a SCUT with a belly mounted finishing mower is better, or somnething like an X750 or X580 Deere.

If it's cleared and graded but also has some landscaping obstacles and the goal is to maintain it like a lawn - a bigger zero turn would be ideal. Brand would depend on the local service network but X Mark and SCAG are both pretty solid.

If you’re looking to maintain like a lawn, go big zero turn. I chose a big hustler over scag and would love either . Neighbor cuts similar acreage with bush hog on his kubota and it looks like pasture land. Both homes sit about 500 yards from the road with large front yards each about 5 acres.

Scag turf tiger is the answer. Rides like a dream, has more than enough power, and a thick, heavy deck.

If you have much slope in the area you mow, take that more serious when picking out your mower than you probably normally would.

You can cheat on the slope recommendations some, but feeling like you’re tempting fate every time you mow gets old.

And those times you feel yourself teeter on the center of gravity a little are very unsettling.

5 acres here and I cut it with a 60” Hustler Super Z with the Kawasaki 1000 on it. It runs about 14mph and I can knock out the entire yard with 1.5hrs

I’ve been cutting 5 acres with an Exmark Lazer Z since 2012. It has been a very good machine. Keep maintenance up and they will last. There are several brands that make high quality mowers, but I would buy Exmark again. Buy once, cry once!

We use a John Deere. It is almost 20 years old. It still does a great job.
