Does nitrogen fertilizer just green up your lawn or does it promote growth as well?

It’s the most important.
Nitrogen that is.

I believe Iron is what greens up the grass.

Both nitrogen and iron increase chlorophyll production in your grass. More chlorophyll=more color.

Ronk, there are so many nitrogen fertilizers out there I’m completely confused. Any suggestions for St. Aug. that I just dethatched

Mid teens to low 20% N. 16-0-8, 21-3-5 or something similar.

It will do both and is an essential element to plant growth. A lot of nitrogen is available naturally to plants but supplementing most plants with N fertilizer improves their overall health dramatically.

There is no reason to overpay for fertilizer. All fertilizers will have three numbers describing the ingredients. The first is the nitrogen percentage the second phosphorous and the third potash (K).
I say on St Aug to apply 50 units (lbs) of actual N per acre. So if you use 13-13-13 to get 50 lbs you would need 50/.13=384 lbs per acre. You can do that math with any fertilizer formulation to get your rate.

I overpay to get micronutrients my lawn needs into the soil, but yeah I generally agree. Most people don’t even get a soil test, so there’s no way to know what micronutrients are needed. No need to overpay.
