I've got a 1/2 acre pond, and I'd like to build a little dock on it. I'm wondering, though, if I drive 4x4's, could it drain the pond? If that happened, it'd be a big stinky mess.

Depends on the soil under the water. Did you have to bring clay in to seal the pond or was the clay in sight good enough?

If you didn't have to bring clay in you should be fine.

How about a floating dock if you are concerned.

One time we built a dock and we were worried about what we would have to do if we had to remove the dock. So we encased 4x4 in concrete base and just kind of let the sit on the bottom. Worked pretty good.

If you have a salt dome or sinkhole there, then sure.

You are more likely to be struck by lightning, I wouldn't worry about it.

The previous owner dug it. But I would doubt they had to bring clay in, the majority of my property has tons of clay.

Beat me to it. A few big blocks of styrofoam or empty 55 gallon plastic drums and build a platform over it. Tie it off at a couple points on shore to secure it and be done with it.

Not sure if this post is legit or not. You're driving a 4x4 post (probably 4-6 of them) 3-4 feet in the soil under a pond, right? So for a 4ft deep hole that's 768 cu inches. 4608 cu in for 6 4x4s. Which are already filled with wood. If your pond was 1/2 acre and only 1 inch in depth that would be over 3 million cu inches. Like someone else said...unless there's a void under your pond (sinkhole, natural salt dome, etc) there's no way it'll drain that pond.

Honestly I had no clue, that's why I asked. I've built plenty docks on the river but never on a man made pond.

The only concern would be if the soil is not good enough to support a pond. That is why I asked about the clay content and if they had to bring in clay.

If they had to truck in clay to get the pond to seal, you would be puncturing that clay blanket and getting into bad soil again. It absolutely would begin to leak over time if that was the case.

If no issues with the clay, no issues with the dock.

I disagree. If the natural soil under the water is pervious, and the builder had to import clay to line it, I’d be hesitant to poke anything through that liner.

With that said, if the consequence of it draining, scrapping the dock and filling in the new post holes is acceptable, have at it.
