There is a difference between an impact driver and an impact wrench. You are thinking of an impact wrench.

Thanks baws, I picked one up. Already drove a couple of large GRK screws and it works well.

Get a kit with both an impact driver and drill. You can usually find one at a big box that will include extra batteries or a sawzall or something like that. I have an 18v Milwaukee combo that came with an impact driver, hammer drill, and sawzall. I use mine at both home and work and they've never let me down.

Once you use an impact dirver, you will find it hard to go back to using a regular drill to run screws. You don't realize hoe beneficial the impact action is and you also don't realize how much strain a regular drill puts on your wrist.

$99 (plus shipping I believe)
M12 Cordless 2-Tool Combo Ki

Includes charger + 2 batteries

The 2407-20 delivers up to 275 in. lbs of torque.
The 2407-20 features a metal ratcheting chuck for maximum durability
The 2462-20 delivers 1,000 in-lbs of torque
The 2462-20 delivers 0-2, 500 RPM for increased fastening speed

Website looks legit and this would be a really easy purchase if you are just trying to give the tools a shot.

I went with Harbor Freight:

Delivers 2,200 inch/lbs torque.

$99 for tool, one battery and charger. 5 year warranty.

Youtube impact driver/wrench people tested it on a dyno and said it performed equally to Milwaukee's latest Gen 4 driver.

As with any Harbor Freight tool, keep it lubricated and it should last.

If it fails, remember that Milwaukee makes the best cordless tools. Dewalt a close second.

I like my Craftsman tools. No extreme work done with them but I've had them almost 3 years and they all work well (sawzall, driver, drill, flashlight).

1. They are shorter than a typical drill and so can fit into tighter spaces
2. They use quick connect bits which are awesome
3. The impact action produces more power *and* is less likely to strip a screw or bit
4. They are much faster than a drill
5. They give you more control
6. A drill loses torque in the higher speed gear. Impact driver delivers more torque at higher speeds.
7. They tend to be smaller and lighter allowing you to work longer.
8. You don't need to apply as much forward force which saves your wrist.

all of that.

Make your life even more easier and get various lengths of these. Magnetic drill bit holder...makes screwing deck type screws fast and easy. Thank me later.

TorqueTest Channel wasn't terribly impressed with the Metabo HPT triple hammer, seems more gimmick than anything. Older Hitachi stuff was a great deal, solid tools and cheaper than red, yellow, and blue usually. Now not so much.

I often use a battery powered drill driver to screw self tapping screws into metal but I don't see the ease of it like the metal roof workers display when working.
Is this because an impact driver would be better to drive self-tapping screws into perlins?

Impacts generally run at a higher RPM until the hammer mechanism engages. Collated screw guns are even faster which is why you see them in drywall, decking, etc.
