link to pic? so are you talking outlets under the uppers? do they have to have a larger base to hide the box & wiring? i'm intrigued; just confused.

LINK

The link is to a product that is different than what I have. But I have 3 dual outlets under one bank of cabinets, and another under cabinetry on a nearby wall. They share space with LED under lighting.

I just measured the bottom base and it comes out to 2 and 3/4 inches of space. The outlets are 2 inches deep. So you would have to lower your head to below the base of the wall cabinets to see them.

Your pic shows a different option we didn’t consider. Ours are mounted directly to the wooden cabinets (facing down), but the wiring goes into the wall through the wooden base.

I think the effect is the same - sleek, uninterrupted elegance of a beautiful backsplash. Although the ones in your pic might be more visible, most kitchen guests won’t notice them. That option also makes an outlet easier to find when setting down an occasional use appliance stored in a pantry. I think your wife, being a professional cook, might prefer the option in your pic over what we have in our house.

How much of a difference does it make using a filter for coffee? I guess to take come of the chlorine taste out?

I don’t filter mine, but I find Baton Rouge water to be pretty good.

My dad filters his, but his tap water is gross.

damn i'm so glad i checked w/ you baws before we got much further.

just a couple of suggestions in this thread and i'm slapping my head like 'duh!'

i would have never thought of the coffeemaker pot filler or hidden outlets in a million years but they're absolutely no-brainers and very little cost compared to the cabinets & appliances.

can't believe we were considering being a caveman and cutting holes in the backsplash every few feet.

my wife is a HUGE minimalist and she can't handle clutter of any kind on the counters at all; removing the outlets will tickle her to death.

eta i forgot to mention we're putting in a 'garbage disposal' button by the sink as well to eliminate another lightswitch.

We did this too. Love it.

Something I wanted to do but was unsuccessful in selling to my wife and our contractor was having a butcher block drawer for knives. My wife and our contractor kept thinking I was talking about this (below) where the knives lie horizontally.

I was attempting to describe this but with a butcher block instead of magnets where the knives lay vertically : .

I wanted it to be near where I would typically cut veggies and meat. I wanted to be able to pull out a drawer and unholster a knife like a swordsman would draw his sword from a scabbard.

But I got a standard boring knife drawer instead.

My wife wanted more symmetry in our cabinetry, but I was thinking a swordsman’s knife drawer on one side of our induction cooktop and a pull out spice rack on the other, both of equal size.

One of the reasons I failed was because I could not find a picture depicting what was in my head. But that might be because it’s just not very practical.

Is there anything a little better?

if you're looking for a lighting+outlet strip combination, the LeGrand Adorne in the other thread is pretty compelling.

Its modular; you select:
- strip length
- controller (on/off/dimmer)
- under counter LED strip or puck (if desired)

You just mount it & plug it in. A little pricey but damn that integration is sweet and you're playing legos trying to figure out everything you need to get your lighting where you need it.

this looks like an older pic with a more obnoxious control box; the new one is thinner and sleeker but this is the gist of the install.

the cool thing about the modular outlets is they all include a plug for a light component if you need it.

It does depend on locality, where I am the municipal water is pretty awful and there's a lot of rust/sediment. I even have the water heater on its own "whole house" filter. I think just getting the chlorine out helps anything I cook/drink so I have another filter at the kitchen sink as well as one of the upstairs bathroom vanities.

Depends on your water quality, but it definitely helps two things: taste and deposits in the coffee maker. If you have a nice machine, it will extend it's life.
