We paid him $200 for less than an hour of work, since I built the pad, ran the gas, and bought all the materials.
And when your house burns down and your insurance realizes you didn’t obtain a permit or upsize your gas meter you will be SOL.
Amazes me what people think it worth saving a few grand on.

Other than 6-7 years ago when we got those Friday afternoon outages on the reg, we haven’t had a single issue ever. Yuri gave us 2-3x planned 45 minute drops which was basically perfect compared to most. I do keep enough battery to run the fridges for a couple days though.

lol. Amazes me how gullible people are.
Generac are the used car sales of generators. They do extremely well by making the process ‘easy’ that’s not a difficult process and their profit margin is insane. You think generac has better plumbers and electricians then the normal joe can find? Half the time companies that are selling package deals like that are using the cheapest (ie worst) plumbers and electricians they can find.
Gas plumbers and electricians do this sort of thing all day long OP. There’s absolutely no reason you can’t buy a generator and hire the subs yourself and save tons of money. There’s nothing special about this job.
ETA: one of my rental properties had the gas pipe corrode and I had a plumber quote my $95/ ft to trench and add a new gas pipe. It was basically a lazy quote I asked for a quick ball park figure, it was also for 90-100ft. So shorter maybe more expensive. But again, that was buried and through some landscaping so HIGH compared to your avg job.

Hire reputable all in one local gen company or sub it out as you see fit. But don’t think you can DIY. You won’t get a permit without licensed subs doing the work.

Are you not allowed to have a permit if you aren’t licensed? Where do you live where it’s so restrictive? The reason for the permit is to make sure the work is completed to code. You would fail inspection when trying to close the permit if it wasn’t done correctly.

Yes. You generally have to have licensed subcontractors to named to perform MEP work to even get the permit issued.

In most towns a homeowner can do their own work and pull permits. You need a license to do plumbing over 10k and electrical over 50k. Where there might be an issue is Entergy may want an electrician license number to pull the meter. I am about to move into a new house and considering installing a generator myself if I can figure out that piece.

Go liquid cooled. Quieter and will last 5x as long. Have one from 2005 still rocking along. Oil change every year, plugs every couple of years, and coolant change every 3 or four years.
Our neighbor has a newer generac air cooled and I can see the status light on it from my back yard. It seems to be red more that it’s green, and can’t tell you the number of times they have someone out there “checking” it out. Even with the enclosure, it still sounds like they are mowing the yard when it’s running. You can stand next to our under full load and have a conversation at normal volume.
