Thinking about a 12,000 BTU mini split for my garage home gym. Anyone have experiences with that? Just wondering if it would be worth it or wouldn’t really do anything here in South Louisiana.

Is your garage insulated?

Mine is and when I turn my mini split on, I can get it down right chilly.

Nah and we open/close the garage for one of the cars. So the hot air gets in when we do that.
But if I installed insulation on the garage door would it help?

Go with the 24k BTU and insulate it. 12K isn't enough in this heat.

I have 12k btu for my 500sf patio. It has some insulation but a lot of windows. Works pretty well.

Keep in mind when you pull that car in it brings a HUGE amount of latent heat with it. If you have a typical 2 car garage it will be about 600sqft and so decently insulated 12k BTU would be the right call but with little insulation and a hot car etc it probably won't work enough to be worth the cost and effort.

I do have an out-of-the-box thought if you have a window. Get a 12k-14k portable AC using and use it while working out. Get one where the fan blows forward (not upward) and turn it to blow into the area you are working out. Most have adjustable vents so you can get it to blow on you whether you are standing up, seated, or lying down. It seems like a kludge and it is but it will keep you chilly and only need to run on demand which will cut the costs significantly and it will cost a lot less initially than a minisplit as well.

Before we insulated and put a split AC system in my wife's hot glass studio she sat working in a nice bubble of cool but it was hot as frick in the rest of the room especially when she was using her large hydrogen or propane oxygen torches. We now have a 3 ton unit cooling 900sq ft and it still works its arse off when she is using one of the larger torches.

This is a medium sized lampworking torch so you get and idea of the heat given off:

My garage is partially insulated, the back wall, 2/3 of the east facing wall, and I insulated the doors. Insulating the garage doors was a simple project, and I was able to buy the panels at Lowe's. I installed a 2.5 ton Daikin mini-split in the west side uninsulated wall. I have it set for 74° F. It works beautifully! My garage is a very comfortable workshop in the summer, and a very warm one in the winter. Highly reccomend Daikin.

I just installed a 24k btu Mitsubishi unit in our garage. We insulated the doors as well and it works great. Very quiet. Usually runs on the lowest speed but if I am going to be working in it I just run the temp down and never break a sweat. Game changer for working on your car in the garage.

most 2 car garages are about 20x20 = 400 sq ft

I actually have this now and thought it would do the job but heat just too intense. Got a consult done and am told 12k minisplit would do fine for my space as long as its kept running at a slightly higher temp all day and then dump it down an hour before using the space. Will still use that portable A/C in addition.

Big question is are you trying to just make it comfortable or an Ice box? I installed a MR Cool cassette style mini split on my parents back porch that have retractable screens and it makes it very comfortable to sit out there when its summer time.

Just comfortable enough for me to get an hour long workout in without having a heatstroke.
