quote:Diesel? Then you gotta buy a 300-500 gallon diesel tank to go along with it.
Diesel when many in your hood have one and they will you will see it fail because others are swiping gas not enough volume to satisfy all the gensets that’s why you want diesel don’t be dependent on natural gas. The government can commandeer any utility go diesel it may be a little bit of a hassle but if you are that much of a Princess go buy natural gas diesel is more efficient as a fuel

Woodlands area subdivision. We had a Generac 22 KW installed this week from Generator Superstore in Tomball. One day installation. We only have a 1 story, 3BR, 2 Bath 1800 sq ft house. Retired and do not want the hassle. Got it through Costco, got all the bells and whistles, price was $12,700. We also get a $1,200 gift card from Costco and another $300 for using our Costco Executive card abd Citi Visa card. Net price is around $11,200. Does not include the monthly maintenance. Well worth it.

I think you are going to be disappointed with that size. I’m about 4k sf with 3 ACs and was told that I’d have to choose what AC that I wanted to run with a 26kw generator.
Other friends have a 24kw and he manually turns off his ACs, lights, etc to help the generator keep up

Dumb question but how does liquid cooled work in winter when not using gen? Is it like car with built in antifreeze? Since it would sit unused all winter unless needed for outage or routine test runs.

I really believe you gotta have redundancy when it comes to generators.

this is the correct answer…

thoughts?
If you live in the south get a liquid cooled.
If it's air cooled get the damn key from the company servicing it so you can pull all the covers off when running the shite out of it so it doesn't overheat.
If it's always In the sun think about getting a pop up to shade it if running 24 hrs for days at a time.
Also watch the exhaust if it's too close and under and eve by a window. You might want to install a CO monitor near that window in the even it drafts in there or the attic where it can be trapped.

I have had one for years. Don’t use it often, but it’s comforting to know that it’s there.
One thing not many people talk about is the “value” of one when you are selling your house. You may not get all of your money out of it, but it is a nice selling point in an area without many of them & almost necessary in an area that has plenty of them (Gulf Coast type areas).

Get one,
In Madisonville. IDA caused our power to be out for 8 days. Running 10 hrs a day kept all refrigerated and frozen food perfect. Pool stayed clear clean and usable. Pool parties everyday for neighbors without generators.
Made post hurricane living nice enough to have Some survivors guilt

We’re not far off here, but we put ours in back when lead times on them were long. Generator guy offered something in the 24-26K range and suggested we’d probably have to rotate the 3 AC units (2.5, 3.5, 4T) but that the power management that you get on Kohler models made it pretty nice/easy to change which circuits were included.
The alternate was to get a Gillette model. They have a 25kW, then the next in their lineup is 40, which was overkill, but we went ahead and grabbed that (and I have joked that I’m going to buy a long extension cord for each of my neighbors, because I could probably power all their fridges/freezers plus an AC unit or two).
And in 18 months the power hasn’t gone out yet.

My house is right around this as well, but 3 units running 10T (2 4T and a 2T mini-split).
For comparison, I added soft starts to both my normal units after Ida and bought a 9500W (on gasoline) portable. I have a 50A input box on the house.
I can run almost my entire house, minus one of the 4T AC units on that 9500W generator on NG (so about 80% of that). Could probably run the other 4T too if I had enough power to kick it on, but other things would likely suffer.
Now, I’m not simultaneously kicking everything on and trying to run it. It’s also probably maxing the capacity of the generator, but it functions. I also can’t run my pool pumps at the same time, although I can kick them on for a bit with load control. I personally think a lot of these things are way oversized unless you have a bunch of electric coils running (heaters, stove, oven). A 25kW should be absolutely fine for any modern house with gas appliances.

I pretty much have the same setup; love it. I have a soft start but I'm not installing until after the summer. I don't need to jack with the A/C during this brutal summer in Houston.
same here. bought the duromax 13k watt trifuel, soft start, interlock and 50amp plug. gonna get electrician to come run a line for me to plug in near the gas hookup before we get too deep in hurricane season

i'm going to start looking at them in next week. price up similar gens, with install and see who has best price.
I have a 22kW Honeywell (Generac) and it’s been great and worth every penny. Was about $13k all said and done in fall 2021 and I had to run about 100 feet of gas line through the attic since the meter isn’t on the same side as the incoming power.
I went round and round about brand until I realized the popularity and commonality of Generac units. Yes, a Kohler or Briggs may have slightly more reliability but damn near anyone can work on a Generac. I have backup spark plugs, oil filters, and a stepper motor )as suggested by a Generac tech). But I can call any company to come service it and chances are they know exactly what to do with it. I’ve got about 35 hours on it in 2 years and life goes on uninterrupted with my young kids.

Air cooled works fine and they are engineered to keep the unit cool with the enclosure design and the giant fan on the end. No need to open the enclosure and cool it, simply add a high-CFM box fan to the intake side of the enclosure if you’re worried about overheating.
Liquid cooled is great but the price jumps considerably and there is more maintenance since it has a whole cooling system. It’s essentially a car engine in a box.

I just got a quote for a 24kw Generac air cooled system with a 10 year warranty for $13,800.
They’re running 114’ of gas line and hardly any for the electric line as it is right by the box. That also includes the meter upgrade.

I had a 24kW Generac installed about 8 months ago when power goes out it runs my entire house (2 central acs) and the central ac in the pool house.
$6K + tax for generator
$2K for install (my electric and gas was all right there pretty close together. Think they ran 20’ of gas line)
Works great but remember it’s a portable with a fancy cover. You must service it and when it’s running for days you must shut it down from every 24hrs and check the oil and change the oil and filter every 3-4 days.

Update:
My power has gone out, and my wife is gloating at our brilliant purchase that I often tell her was a huge waste of money.
ETA- she’s calling her friends to tell them she was right all along.
ETA2- load with “the normal stuff” on is around 11.5kW.
I know that estimators are out there for this, but I had my wife flip on a few things for fun. Got to around 26kW by running:
Both ovens (~3Kw each)
Microwave (~3kW. Rated for 1700w)
Dryer (~5kW)
And the washing machine/dishwasher made up the rest, but they were actually on for real, so I didn’t ask her to flip them off to confirm their individual consumption.
So we could host Thanksgiving in this blackout.
But I would have settled for the quick connect, the transfer switch, a tri-fuel portable and staying in my bedroom (has its own 2.5T unit that it shares with 2 bathrooms, 1 bed).

What companies in BR are people using to service their generators?

Only one I’ve found to service my older no-longer-made water cooled 22kw generator is arcco.

I got 3 quotes in the last month (2 Generac, 1 Kohler)
House is 2700 sq. ft.
2 of my quotes were around $16K for a 22kW, with around a $1700 a year service fee
I went with my third quote, signed the agreement yesterday. 22kW for $13k, with a yearly service fee of $450.

Had a Firman from Costco that works fine but recently upgraded to a Generac 22kw. 0% financing and 10 year warranty. No regrets.
