re: Price Check on Trex Deck

Be sure the deck builder knows what is required for a Trex deck. The joists have to be closer than a wood deck. My sister had the wood boards taken off her deck and replaced with Trex. The deck guy kept the same frame and now the Trex boards sag in between the joists especially on hot days.

I built a little staircase exiting the doggie door out of Trex.
Three 2x6 boards were a little over $100.
That was over 16 years ago.
Stuff's expensive.

What's also crazy is the price of fasteners these days. It used to be. You just put a couple hundred dollars for all the nails and screws. Now with the lag bolts and deck screws, the small job can easily add $300 to $400 just in the fasteners. By the time you buy the butyl tape for the joist you can throw in another $150 on top of that. All of the PVC board and concealed fasteners brings up the price by a couple dollars per square foot when you're spacing the joist on 1 ft centers.
Have you found that the Trex has faded over the years?

Yes, but may be negligible compared to painting or staining every 5 years(?) or so. It gets really hot where it's located. I'll see if I can take a pic later and post it.
Another thing, Trex is REALLY heavy!

That was the other issue with it when I was building on my decks. That stuff gets super hot. I'd rather risk a splinter than have my feet burn getting out of the pool. Even the cool shield stuff from weather shield got hot when I left it out in the sun. All I can think about is being a kid and the hot sand at the beach. There's no way to walk across that without looking like a complete idiot.

I would say it's probably a $19,000 job. They probably threw money at it so they could sub it out to a deck guy and make six or $7,000. Good luck.
If it’s not a custom builder OP, I would say they are almost definitely subbing it out like this guy said with a huge profit margin.
So it’s up to you, like said it will be done when your house is done or you may have to wait to have someone else do it.
ETA: always get a 2nd quote if you aren’t comfortable. It’s part of doing business.

Decided to handle the deck after closing.
Received 3 different quotes that were all around $15-18K. These quotes also let us customize way more than the builder was offering.

You got a lot of tips on the correct way to build a deck on this thread. Make sure you look at the quotes to make sure they're doing everything correctly. Glad it's working out for you.
But the last one is make sure they use 80% treated for your post and joist. The new stuff is crap crap crap crap
