Noticed I may have some termites or carpenter ants in my wood pile. Any suggestions on how to safely remove them

What will you be burnjng it in? If it isnt for an indoor fireplace, I'd spray the pile down with diesel.
If it is for an open fireplace, I'd spray the pile with diesel.

Outside in a fire pit. Have dogs and cats so don’t want to use anything that is toxic to them or to burn. I’ve read diatomaceous earth works fairly well. Has anybody used it?

Keep it away from any structure so there's little chance of them spreading from the pile. If it's not much wood, just burn it as needed and that will eliminate the problem.
If wanting to try to kill them, maybe put a tarp over the pile of wood and use a couple of those aerosol cans of insecticide to fog the pile........that's all I've got.

Buy some Taurus sc and dig a trench around where the firewood is. Fill the trench with the appropriate ratio mixture of it and water then fill it back in. Once it dries, it’s safe for people and pets and those termites will die within 60-90 days.

It should work you probably need to apply to the ground surface area the wood will be sitting on. It does not kill immediately but it kills. I use it in the bottom tray of my beehive and it kills the hive beetles that are attempting to get into my hive. I have not applied it to the ground around my hive because it will kill everything soft bodied that comes into contact with it.
