Did another canning run with some fresh picks the creoles, lemon boy are coming in nicely and had more Serrano’s than I can eat
So did a couple jars of Salsa also
But the smell of that bread n butter pickle juice is a gift from God

Got my two biggest tomatoes thus far the other day. I can’t make salsa fast enough to keep up with the tomatoes right now ha.
Both of those are Berkeley tie dye and seem to be the biggest I’ll get. Pretty cool. My peppers are coming on strong now. Cucumbers are about to give up the ghost after a lot of production. I’m pretty much over everything and ready to pull everything besides peppers and plant okra.

I am having the hardest time finding regular mouth canning lids. Is anyone else having trouble finding them? Seems like they’re always out at the stores. I may have to order online. Canning equipment in general seems to be in short supply everywhere I look.

They’re great. They do look similar to old Germans I’ve grown in the past. The interior base color is red on these though. They taste kinda like a Cherokee purple but not as acidic.

Anyone know how to control purselane in the garden? I'm in west central Georgia and that stuff is worse than kudzu.

Sweet potato slips arrived. And sat in the mailbox for 2 days in 90 degree heat. Thanks wife. And we’re going out of town for 3 days, so I guess I will start them in some small plastic squares until I get back and give them a chance to recover before baking in this weather.

After trying different stores all week, this is unfortunately what I had to do. But I bought in bulk. So I should be good for a while.
I did something yesterday that I haven’t had to do in a while. I hooked up the irrigation. 5 days of hot, dry weather. So I figured I’d give them a drink.
Also I finally started picking Marconi peppers. Grilled a few last night to go with the burgers.
They were really good. And it’s hard to beat homemade pickles and thick slices of homegrown tomatoes on a deer burger.
My Roma’s appear to be slowing down. Which is good. Cause I have 6 gallons of peeled Roma’s in the freezer and plenty left still on the counter top. Beefmasters also are slowing down. Cucumbers are still coming in good. Beans still look like crap. Okra is taking off.

The rain we got this season really screwed me up. Being a new garden with new soil I really couldn't spare the nutrient drainage that took place with what I was trying to accomplish, but, it's all part of the game. My big beef's are making some pretty tomatoes. Creoles made a lot more but smaller. San Marzano's are about to ripen, and I probably have enough to make a few jars of sauce. I've been having to pick my tomatoes early to avoid any bird damage. The word is out on my buffet and there's enough to fill the superdome in my back yard. Carrots are huge and ready to pick also.
I think I'll be starting a few Louisiana reds and pinks to start a fall crop when these tomatoes are done to see how those do.
ETA: What this rain really impacted was my squash. Zucchini's are making like crazy but my butternuts have been having significant fruit drop prior to pollination size. Hopefully we will be a bit drier now and I'll be able to keep some on the vine

I've had better success with fall tomatoes than with spring/summer ones since there seems to be less pests and fungal issues as the weather cools.
The only problem is if there is an early frost. That knocks down the plants in a hurry, but there's fried green tomatoes and salsa verde to be made if you need to harvest green tomatoes.
The worst was one year I had dozens of huge, beautiful tomatoes just starting to ripen and a hail storm came through and flattened my entire garden in no more than 1/2 hours time. Damn hailstones were the size of golf balls and not one tomato survived.

I may try rooting some suckers from my beefmaster plants for a fall crop. If that doesn't work out, I still have some seeds. I'm really liking this variety. I may try some heirloom types as well.

Waiting for my Marconi's to turn red. Since I have an abundance of cucumbers I dried them and made chips. I made some plain and some with Salt & Vinegar. They're pretty tasty.
